Winch motor rebuild question

The rotor has portions on it where the "coating" is chipped away. I purchased spray on coating at Grainger's but want to know when I spray it should I coat the commutator part also or leave it bare? Thanks

You want to leave the commutator bare.you should clean it to get a good clean surface for the brushes to ride on.

Thanks! I had to ask because I didn't think it could make for a good contact surface if it were coated but I saw pictures of the rotors being dipped into the coatings and wasn't sure. That's the great thing about having so many resources available on this site. Thanks again!

I realize I have another question. Do I need to tape off the steel "middle" section of the rotor (the steel part that passes by the field windings?) Or do I caot the center and clean it off later so the wires running through it get coated?

Re: Winch motor rebuild question

you can paint it. The winding should be deep enough in the slot and insulated so that light sanding wont remove the insulation and cause shorting. just use caution to not over clean it to where you could cause a problem.
