Re: Online engine resources (casting numbers, calculators, etc.)
I have a water cooled Clifford intake. Haven't yet taken on a ground up engine build. What's been done and what else besides boring the cylinders would I have to do? Has the bottom end been rebuilt? Any more parts to buy?

Re: Online engine resources (casting numbers, calculators, etc.)

The Clifford intake will be perfect for the motor. So it would need bored and total rebuild. Has been cleaned and ready for the machine shop. She will be a good running dependable engine when it will be done. |

Re: Online engine resources (casting numbers, calculators, etc.)
I've been researching all my casting numbers, but I have something I hope an avid expert can help with.
My heads have cast numbers of 3998991, roughly '68 to '76ish 350 1.72/1.50 valves. The thing I need help with is, and I don't know if it matters, one head has a stamp date of A254, the other, a stamp of P104. As far as my research has gone, I know A= January, 25= day of month, and 4= year? '64?, '74? These are supposed to be the original heads, it was my dad’s truck bought off the show room floor in 1971. And the P, what’s that mean? Appreciate some clarification. |
Re: Online engine resources (casting numbers, calculators, etc.)
On Cylinder Heads the Date codes for small- and big-block V8 cylinder heads are usually found next to the casting number underneath the valve cover. The dates are, in most cases, alphanumeric.
Small- and big-block V8 head casting numbers are found underneath the rocker cover, usually between rocker arm pedestals. Casting #’s. & Date codes are cast on top of head (under valve cover) between second & third rocker arms from left. First letter (A through M) is month (Jan through Dec) (I not used), one or two digits for day of month, one digit for last digit of year cast. Lightweight castings (not for hi-perf use) have “scalloped” edge below exhaust ports; regular have straight edge Chevy has used various raised casting symbols on the ends of smallblock cylinder heads, which on some heads are duplicated in the rocker arm valley. These symbols were used to indicate the type of features found on those particular heads. The same symbol can be found on different heads with different casting numbers. These symbols are helpful, but should not be solely relied upon to determine what type of heads you have or what features they have. http://www.yearone.com/updatedsingle...engdetaile.jpghttp://www.yearone.com/updatedsingle...engdetailb.jpghttp://s4.tinypic.com/9rrlw6.jpg YEARS CASTING# CID Intake Exhaust CC 1968-69 3998991 307 1.72 1.5 69 1970-76 3998991 350 1.72 1.5 75 Small Block Chevy Cylinder Head Identification http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=353542 http://www.ajgeneral.com/sbc_cylinde...sting_numbers/ http://chevytech.info/3c3998991.html http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/w...e_end_ids1.jpg SBC cylinder head identification http://www.crankshaftcoalition.com/w...identification Very Good Info: http://www.mre-books.com/chevy/engin...der_heads.html |

Re: Online engine resources (casting numbers, calculators, etc.)
Yes, having the 350 short block rebuilt. The question was the P104 cast in one of the heads, all my research shows A through M was used for casting dates, one of mine has a "P".

Re: Online engine resources (casting numbers, calculators, etc.)
Are you sure it isn't a 'D' ? Sometimes the casting is a little rough and hard to deciefer the numbers and letters

Re: Online engine resources (casting numbers, calculators, etc.)
Yes that certainly does look like a 'P'. But I would have to lean towards the response 1Bad got from Year One.
|
Re: Online engine resources (casting numbers, calculators, etc.)
Thanks to all for the clarification. Especially thanks to 1Bad62Pro/Street for pursuing that with Year One. I'll just accept it as a "B".
