Shifter removal, 4 spd.

Hi. Does anybody know how to remove this shifter (see image with this thread) in a 1966 C10 Pickup 283 4spd.? I have read some other threads on the topic but haven't managed to remove it yet. (In case you are wondering, I have removed the back up light switch).

Push down and turn to the left a bit the round sheetmetal thing at the base of the shifter.

A large pair of waterpump pliers works well to open wide and grab just the sheetmetal retainer.
A picture of what it looks like might help,, The retainer looks like this

and like Frank said,, push down and COUNTERCLOCKWISE to remove

Thanks Franken and Marv! I tried again today with success. Thanks again for the advice.
I used a bit of a novel method.....I took two short pieces of oak flooring, bungeed them together, slid them over the shifter so that they rested on top of the sphere....holding onto both extended ends of the oak flooring, I pushed down and twisted, easily removing the shifter.

I promise you that's the first time that's ever been done!

I had trouble at the scrapyard getting one apart and used random bits of wood to get one to pop--its a pain.
