looking for size of holes in crossmember for...

Hi guys,
I know it's been posted before but I can't find it.

People have been cutting out holes in the middle frame crossmember to route exhaust thru so that it would stay above the bottom of the frame. How big is the piping that you welded on?

I spoke to Early Classics yesterday to ask where they had the mounts they used on their truck project (see their 68 Restoration part 4) and the ones they made for Copperhead. They said that those were done by a family member of employee. From what he described they would not be cost effective to make for anybody else. He did suggest that I could probably just get a 3 1/2 or 4 inch hole cut in that cross member then have a piece of pipe about 1 inch long welded into the hole. He thought that would probably retain the crossmembers integrity. I figured that you could get a 4 inch piece of pipe welded in and run your emergency brake cable inside the pipe and under your exhaust. That is what I am planning on doing. Just have to find someone to weld in the pipe.

We cut it out with a RIDGID brand 4' hole saw and heat and bend a piece of 3/16" x 1" steel strap around a 3 3/4 post and butt weld it then weld it into the crossmember and weld the crossmember closed everywhere else with 1/4" plate, the brake cable thru a stainless through frame connector like streetrods.

wow a 4 foot hole saw?!? just messing with you mothertrucker. thanks for the info. I'll check out my metal source and find a 4" steel pipe, trace, buy a 4" hole saw, cut, & weld. thanks for the info.

Mothertrucker....did you use some kind of jig or setup to keep the drill steady?

Yes we built a bolt on plate to keep the 4 foot hole saw centered, I just came from spraying Seacrows oak bed with clear and i'm in lala land.
