removing undercoat??
 

I have the doors off my truck and completely disassembled and ready for sandblasting...I'm not blasting inside the door cavity but I do want to coat inside the door with lizardskin..its got something sprayed in the center of the panel that looks like undercoating...I want to completely remove it but not by scraping or blasting...is there a good chemical that will remove it...its about 1/16" thick...

Tell me why you'd want to remove undercoating that's done a fabulous job of preventing rust only to replace it with urethane bed liner?

well I don't have to remove it. ..but as you see in the pics its cracked and coming loose in a few spots...I just didn't want to put something over it only to have the original break loose underneath it...is there something wrong with putting lizard or por15 inside the door?..those bare spots you see in that one pic I didn't remove. .those pieces were laying in the door cavity...that's why I say it might turn loose..

Use a sharpened wood paint stir stick and remove any of the loose edges . It's rubberized undercoating and inside the doors was intended as noise suppression rather than rust proofing , I respray the inner doors again with rubberized undercoating after clean up and vacuuming out the bottom , Some thin plastic folded and inserted into the bottom door drains prior to respraying helps keep them open just wait about 30 minutes after spraying the inner door and then pull them out from the bottom of the door ,clean up with mineral spirits . it give the door a more solid sound when closing .:smoke:

yeah that sounds good grumpy....I poked around on it with a scraper thinking the stuff may just fall off but what's still on there is stuck pretty good....I guess ill just clean it as best I can and put another coat on it...there is some surface rust in the bottom I need to clean up somehow or other....

I remember being told that dry ice works for undercoat removal so I searched on that to be sure it wasn’t an old hallucination! Found this: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wcuLPO36Rmo

There were other videos and info as well, this was the only one I watched. This one shows whacking the metal with a hammer and while you wouldn’t want to dent your door with a BFH it might be worth trying with a softer rubber mallet?

im probably gonna leave whats still stuck tight and just put another coat on top of it...it just had some turn loose and I thought the rest may come off easy but after doing what Grumpy suggested whats left appears to be hanging on pretty tight....
