1967 4x4 power steering conversion question
I am new and this is my first post so bare with me, I have a question on converting a non-power steering 67 frame to power steering. I started out with a bare 67 4x4 frame and 2 parts pickups. I took the axles out of a 87 4x4 chevy pickup and I have the power steering sector from that. I also have a complete 1970 2wd CST/10 that I am robbing the body off of so I can steal the power steering sector from that too. Now from what I understand a 67 4x4 never had power steering. My frame does not have the "bumps" or "dimples" for the bolts for the sector and I am worried about spacing. I am also thinking for some reason that it only has 3 bolt holes instead of the 4 needed, not 100% sure but I will check tomorrow. Anyone have any suggestions? Not afraid to cut and weld as I am also doing a lwb to swb conversion.

BCK, welcome aboard!!!
I just did this to my sons truck. Check out my hulk jr build in my signature. Captainfab (his user name) makes an adapter for the early trucks that don't have the frame dimple for the power steering box. I will try and post a link to the thread. It's more like 3/8"-1/2" but you need to make sure it is strong as this is a weak point in the frame on these trucks.

you can make your own plate if you have the means to build one. the 2wd box will not work.

If I remember right 73-87 trucks came with spacers on the power steering boxes. Since you'll have to use a 4x4 steering box anyway it would make since to get it off the newer "square body" trucks and just use the spacers that come on it as well. Yes, you can drill the extra hole if needed. I've yet to see a three hole 4x4 box but I hear they are out there. I'd stick with the 4-hole unit though.
Seems to me as I look at that adapter plate and the spacers it would be about the same as the spacers I mentioned. As for the weak point, that's true of all the c-channel frames but I've only had one crack after terrible abuse and after welding it I never had it crack again either. Looks like making a plate with some spacers couldn't be very hard. Just remember to radius the corners. Sharp corners are a "punch point" to the metal they are up against. Just my opinion. |

anyone know the measurements for drilling the holes and getting the correct angle and placement of these steering boxes?

BCK. Remember the link I posted. For 60$ it came with the plate, bolts, and a pattern that showed were to drill. It took me a few minutes to install. Sometimes a few bucks can save hours...
Maybe you can ask if anyone can trace you a pattern from a frame with no box installed. Or blow up a picture to match the frame. Good luck. |

Well I got it and got it drilled and welded on, searched around on the forum to try to get it in the right place, should be able to adjust if I am of a hair off with the alignment. Thanks everyone for the help |
