Neutral safety / starter relays

I have the black 87 style relay that is powered 12v hot by the key i break the ground through the micro switch on the shifter in neutral and park . It seems these relays are having a hard time with the amp drw of the starter solinoid . Should this relay be a heavier duty relay ? Say like a S-55 borg warner ? When i bypass the relay the starter kicks in fine . Seems like the relay cant handle the amperage after a while . What are you guys using for this ?

Re: Neutral safety / starter relays

The solinoid can be 40-50 amps at the point the key hits . The Ford relay can handle this inrush . The small black relays cant over time . You use the Ford relay to fire the chevy solinoid . Mopar also has something like this
