1986 GMC Sierra Classic LWB build

Hi all, i'm new to the forums. just wanted to share my current project with everyone. it's a 1986 GMC sierra classic that i've been slowly working on for several years now. i finally got it painted and now things are kicking into overdrive.
me and my dad have been working on it since i was 15, i'm 19 now. we put a new motor/tranny combo in, a vortec headed 350 built up just a little. 9.6:1 compression, .486 lift comp cam, vacuum secondary holley 600. nothing too crazy since its a daily driver, but its alot more than a stock motor. just a rebuilt TH350, i think we might of put a shift kit in it i cant remember (been a while lol). got an audio build going along side this build, the mids/highs are installed already, i have the amps and headunit, just havent put them in yet. still need to buy about 60 feet worth of 1/0 wire for wiring batteries, amps, alternator, big 3, and some new grounds.

anyway onto the pics. i dont have many, just pics of it sitting in the shop after we painted it. more to come once it gets out in the sun with bumpers and lights and everything put back together.
the paint color is BMW Chili Red

also, anyone know if one of those sectioned foldable hard toneau covers are made for an 8ft bed? the ones that are like the stock avalanche covers.

and yes, the bed is getting a spray in bedliner, not leaving it the stock gray paint :)

Re: 1986 GMC Sierra Classic LWB build

thats a good question. im not sure if i have any before pics, i started sanding and prepping for paint 3 years ago, and at the time never thought about taking pictures.
ill have to dig through my pictures folders and see if i can dig anything up.
but it was stock gray and white 2 tone, had all the molding at the paint line, molding on the back of the cab, the huge trim piece on the tailgate, and wheel well trim.

i hate all that trim, so i ripped it all off, welded in the emblem holes, welded up the tailgate trim holes, filled in the cargo light hole. it had all the chrome locking strips for the windshields too and i swapped them out for the black rubber ones.

the truck should be back from the makeshift paint shop we set up to paint it in and ill have it back here at the shop at my house. so ill get the good camera out and get some pics of it in the sun, it still needs to be wet sanded and buffed and the door jams still need painting, but ive got interior work to do before that happens.

Re: 1986 GMC Sierra Classic LWB build

I worked on her a little today. Cut the small vertical bars inbetween the horizontal bars off on the stock grille, painted the gray part of the grille silver with some Duplicolor single stage rattle can, and painted the GMC letters red. Tomorrow, if it's not raining, I plan on putting a coat or two of clear on the GMC letters and painting the horizontal bars on the grille black with the Duplicolor single stage stuff. But with my luck, it'll be raining tomorrow.

Looks good man. Sounds like you have come a long way with it.

Re: 1986 GMC Sierra Classic LWB build

Thanks. I've come a ways with it and I'm not near done.
I can't wait for the holidays to be over so I can start making money again and try to get this thing finished.

Re: 1986 GMC Sierra Classic LWB build

Did some work tonight. Got my hood aligned so it doesn't catch on the cowling anymore and did the "Big 4" under the hood.

Didn't get pics of the hood but here's the wiring job.
Stock positive wire from the alternator, wow that's tiny!

New batteries are on the list of need-to-get's.
I know my engine bay is dirty, no use in cleaning it til' I'm done with all the work. :P

New hot wire from alternator to battery, new block to frame ground, new block to battery ground, new battery to frame ground.
All wire is Knukonceptz KLMX 1/0 and covered with tech flex.

Nice truck. I'd like to see the work you did on the grille.

Noticed you're running headers. Any idea as to what brand they are? They look like the pair I'm going to put on mine once I get them painted.

qu1cks1lver56 12-29-2009 02:04 AM

Re: 1986 GMC Sierra Classic LWB build

Thanks, I'll snap some pics of it when I'm out in the shop tomorrow. I got a billet grille for Christmas so I kinda quit working on it, but I'm still gonna finish it incase I ever decide to switch back. Maybe tomorrow will be warm enough to do some more paint on the grille and finish painting the headlight bezels.

The headers are Hedman Hedders Huslers made for these trucks, I think. In a search for Hedman's for these trucks that's what I came up with, and they look exactly like these. They've got pretty big tubes and nice thick flanges.

edit: nice avatar. love that movie.

Went for the maiden voyage tonight. I've been all excited all night.
And the motor's got more that I thought it does, got on it a little doin about 25 and it lit 'em up like it was nothin'.

http://i90.photobucket.com/albums/k2...6/DSCF0179.jpg

well photobucket, once again, isn't letting me upload. I got this one but none of the others would go.

I somehow got shorted a centercap. Summit won't do anything about it since the wheels were bought 3 years ago, so I gotta get a new one.

And I think I don't like the black walls out as much as I thought I would, need to see how much it's going to cost me to get 'em flipped

Re: 1986 GMC Sierra Classic LWB build

It looks sharp, but yeah the tires might look better with the letters out.

qu1cks1lver56 01-19-2010 09:40 PM

Re: 1986 GMC Sierra Classic LWB build

Thanks.
Yeah the more I see tires with white letters out the more I wish mine were.

My uncle gave me the set of tail light lenses off his '79, which are almost new. Looks MUCH better than my old faded ones.

1985-GMC 01-19-2010 10:29 PM

Re: 1986 GMC Sierra Classic LWB build

Well I also put my tires on with letters in, but now i wish i would have put them out. I don't know maybe one day I will switch them around.

qu1cks1lver56 01-19-2010 10:41 PM

Re: 1986 GMC Sierra Classic LWB build

The guy at the tire store asked me, and I told him I didn't know and asked him. He said "I think white letters in" and I agreed (stupidly).

1985-GMC 01-19-2010 10:55 PM

Re: 1986 GMC Sierra Classic LWB build

I did mine myself with tire spoons, I just don't feel like scratching my wheels all up pulling them off, and then taking them down their and getting balanced again. Its just a pain

qu1cks1lver56 01-19-2010 11:26 PM

Re: 1986 GMC Sierra Classic LWB build

Yeah, I'm not risking scratching these up. Aluminum is easy enough to mess up anyway.

Re: 1986 GMC Sierra Classic LWB build

So the water pump decided to go bad. The block is from a 92, so we got a 92 water pump. And the 86 brackets don't go with a 92 water pump. And a 92 pump is for a serp setup. So now I gotta go to the junkyard and go raid some 90's trucks and get the whole serpentine setup off the front of a motor. Which is fine I guess since I wanted a 6 groove setup anyway so I could get a better alternator from DC Power Inc.

Re: 1986 GMC Sierra Classic LWB build

Damn!!! Your truck is looking sharper every time that I look at it. BTW, you never did show me what you did to the grille that was on it before the billet one.

qu1cks1lver56 01-21-2010 08:35 PM

Re: 1986 GMC Sierra Classic LWB build

Ahh I forgot to take pics of it, when I get back to the shop I'll snap a few pics of it. I never finished it, but I can show you the progress I made on it and you can pretty much figure out where I was going with it.

edit: and thanks man.

Cool. Would you mind if I make a suggestion for some exhaust tips?

Re: 1986 GMC Sierra Classic LWB build

Please do. I haven't decided what I want to do with 'em, that's why I left the pipes long like they are so I have enough to work with when I buy some tips.

They're the ones in this picture. They're really common on Challenger T/A's and Plymouth Cuda AAR's.

Or you could get ones like mine has. Mine have the rolled lip. I want to get another set of them for the loudest truck contest and stretch a piece of piano wire inside of them.
