Mine! 1966 GMC custom cab. Lots of options. Chrome grill & bumper, custom cab trim, Power brakes, Power steering. Vaccum mileage gauge. Mine is for sale or Trade! The other is a 1963 that was at this years Redding Ca. drag races. It was pulling a trailor with a long top fuel style dragster in it!

anybody know anything else about that black chassis mount camper ?whats it like up close or who the owner is ?sure looks nice !!!!!! i would like to have one /got a 66 cab and frame {was a chassis mount camper } thought about ordering some slab sides like the new camper trucks -if you give them a drawing they cut out all windows and doors ,then stand the sides up on the truck and add roof members and roof skin! the insides are paneled .just add storage compartments and cabinets .not too expensive ! problem is getting sides and skin shipped w/o damaging it? any :metal:way thats another option if a nice truck cant be purchased ? than ks mike /carryallman / wahl norwalk iowa

Re: Pictures of 1960-66 campers please

wahl4m, maybe think about finding an old trailer type camper and fitting it to your truck ?
At a antique tractor show I saw an old trailer camper with the axle and tongue removed, it was strapped to the bed of a 1900 International truck.

Jocko, pic #3 is totally awesome, they look like Alaska brand campers.

I remember my Dad doing that to all his trucks when I was a kid. Don't see that too often anymore.

Does anyone have any pics of a long step with a period correct topper ? I've been trying to find one for my truck but it seems as though there were not alot of them made in the first place and there were even fewer survivors.

What year is that brochure? The part about the self adjusting brakes may explain why I couldn't find the opening for adjusters on my truck :uhmk:

I suppose the grandfather of our "trucks with campers" would be John Steinbecks' Rocinante - his '60 GMC with a special camper he custom ordered. He used the trip and observations fort his books "Travels with Charly" It was the first book I read of his and to this day my favorite.

His truck and camper were restored and put in the museum. If you have not read the book, do so as it is very good.

It's in a 1965 Mechanix magazine. I just took a hub off of a 65 an hour ago and it had self adjusters on the front.

The everything on my 66 is so covered with mud that I thought I just didn't dig thru enough yet, glad I don't have to worry about adjustment. I know I need to get the manual for the beast so I don't have simple questions like this.

I read Travels With Charley years ago on a back packing trip... I don't know if it sparked my wanderlust, or just unleashed it, but I've taken every opportunity to drive all over this country, and I think of Able Baker Charlie Dog every time!
I've often wondered what kind of truck he had... I didn't remember if it was ever mentioned in the book, and I was in college at the time and not into '60-'66 trucks... though I have OFTEN thought a GMC would have been right, or an International Harvester.

I've got a '61 Suburban that I drive everywhere, and have frequently camped out of it for deer hunting and car shows, and again remember Travels when I do it. (The Suburban has been in 20 states in 60,000 miles since I bought it 7 years ago this fall)

Thanks for posting these pics--you made my day!

-Brad
