Has anyone installed fuel injection?
 

I'm looking at installing one of these on my truck. Stock fuel tank 327 engine.

Has anyone else done this? If so is it worth doing? What else do I need?

Thanks! I had no idea so many were already out there... What about running an inline pump and return line? I really don't want to change my fuel tank.

Get the return line system...DO NOT waste money on that piece of crap "command center" that allows you to use the stock pump. It's a pile of sh** that costs twice as much as a return line system. System works fine as long as it's 30 degrees outside...but the stupid pump runs so Hot it Boils the fuel in the canister. I installed this setup in my 76 with a stock 350. Flushed the tanks and all new fuel lines...new 5-9 psi electric pump...installed the command center in the engine bay far from heat per instructions...fired and ran great but when driving in 90 degree weather the engine kept dying. Well, when you touched the canister it would burn your hand. Pull the low pressure line and fuel would come spraying out of the canister because it was boiling so bad. Other people have had this issue to...so my advice...get the return system. Throttle body works well though...just make sure to set the iac steps for finer tuning and it's good to go. Long as fuel is Moving it won't boil.

The command center has worked for me with no issues.
But I don't deny others haven't been as fortunate.
Otherwise, the Fitech has great reviews.

Well maybe you got lucky, but me and many others(not on this forum) have had issues with these pumps heating up to 124+ degrees. Only takes a few minutes to. Cold started mine on a 60 degree morning...it wasn't 10 minutes of running before that pump was frying...engine wasn't even that warm and the hood was open!

So, we recommend he stay away from the command center. I'm fine with that.
What's your feelings on the Fitech unit itself?

I like it alot! Very affordable and simple to install. Setting up is simple and straight forward. Programmer for initial tune up works very well and it only takes minor adjustments to make the engine run like a top. Cool thing is you can adjust almost Everything by the programmer...from Idle Air Control to accel pump pressures and idle speeds ect ect. Both primaries and secondaries have outside idle adjustment screws for tuning on mild to radical cams.

Sorry if I sound rude on the command center...just been pretty ticked about spending $500 in fuel related equipment just to have it not work per instruction.

Has anyone used a factory in tank pump with either a modified sending unit or relocated tank (Blazer tank for example)? Seems to me that it might be a little less fuss having to take fuel delivery issues out of the equation?

Is there a reason my question was moved to the general truck forum?

I was asking regarding installing the fitech unit in my '66. How others had done the fuel delivery/return etc... Specifically on that generation of trucks.

I don't think my question is general in nature.

I was at the Goodguys Northwest Car Show a month or so back and saw DUAL FiTech units on a 1953 Chevy Belair with a blown BBC. That was cool as hell. I've seen lots of single units, but this was a first to see duals, and even cooler to see them used on a 8-71 blown BBC. The system the guy had used an -8 AN line from the fuel cell in the trunk pushing fuel by a Holley HP fuel pump. Very clean setup. Wish I would snapped a pic!

I have installed the fitech FI system with there inline fuel pump kit on my 68 with the stock tank behind the seat , with 0 issues ,

The inline kit has everything you need in it for the supply and return install..

The only thing I added or changed was I used a 72 fuel sending unit because it has a vent tube in it, I wanted to make sure I had enough of venting for the return system

I can run my fuel Tank down till near Empty with no issues with feeding the gravity fed fuel pump , the stock tanks or so slim you can hard corner in turns with a near empty tank with no issues (NO Baffle required in the tank.....)

The biggest issues I've had is with the customer service. I got mine last fall and their CR ability was almost nonexistent then. They sold so many units they were ill prepared for the onslaught of callers. Over the year and 7,000 miles it's been a bit of a learning experience but not bad. This is not a "set it and forget it" system nor is the best tuner and dyno going to squeeze every last potential horsepower out of your build combo with this system. It's a decent general throttle body at a great entry level price. Biggest issue I have had was understanding the terminology and what affects what when tuning the system. The system did elevate my biggest carb peeves such as elevation changes, cold start, off throttle drive ability and high end performance, overall drive ability, etc. It still has some hiccups, some tuning related on my part, and a couple others im unsure about. For the money, I am fairly happy with it.

Currently I am using the stock tank with an in line pump and the LS1 filter/regulator canister.

Yeah, TJ had a bad experience. As I'm sure many others. Although, Summit Reviews shows the majority had good experience.
I do plan on getting the tank out of my cab, but my tank was new, and the carb was giving me issues, so this was the quick and easy solution. I have had zero problems with the sump pump.

Just an update on the return style system.....been running flawlessly and mileage is getting better. Throttle body takes about 200 miles to really learn the engine. Only problem I am having thus far is getting my IAC steps down to 3-10 at idle. So far they have been in the 40 range. Other than that...runs like a champ.

it's not detrimental if you dont get into that 3-10 range but if you're hovering around 40 warm the motor up, shut it off, turn the front butterfly screw counter clockwise about 1/8th turn then fire it up and wait for the IAC to settle down again then take your reading. If you still read above your target then repeat procedure; if you read lower than your target range then leave the motor running and slightly turn the screw clockwise in very small increments til you get in range, then save.
