driveshaft center bearing play 1970 GMC

should there be any play between the driveshaft and the housing for the bearing? I have a bad grinding noise and the u joint to the trans was shot. I pulled it out to replace it but noticed the play on the housing.

The bearing isn't loose, just the driveshaft moves around in the housing.

I guessing you are saying that the rubber is the part moving? The rubber insert is made to cushion the bearing, but not move...
Might post some pic's of what's going on, to make sure of situation and type of carrier bearing....

The housing is moving around the rubber. What other pictures do you need? Does anyone know the part number for the rubber?

Wow, you got me there.
That's a heavy duty version 68 carrier bearing. Only one I've seen is on my big block 68. I'm sure they came with other engines, just heavier duty stuff, not sure. Looking one up for a 68 C10 w/ 396, TH400 will send you in the direction of that carrier bearing, and maybe just the rubber piece also by itself.

Have seen discussions here about buying pieces separately, don't remember the result.

If you hold the bearing, does the shaft spin inside the bearing?? freely???

That rubber looks fairly new, can't imagine that you've got a problem???

If I was there.....

That looks like the original carrier on my 69 Longhorn......IMHO, you would do yourself a favor, & just replace the carrier assembly (pay it one time);) longhorn

I'd jack it up, put rear on jack stands. Put in gear, carefully run it in all gears. One person in cab, one person under to observe and listen. Curious what the carrier bearing is doing at that point...
Be careful to make sure both rear wheels have stopped spinning before putting trans in park...

Re: driveshaft center bearing play 1970 GMC

I have jacked it up before but only able to move the trans lever from underneath the car. I don't recall it moving much. But I also haven't let it get going that fast. I'll do that once I get my engine running. Bad plug wire and burnt another.
May just get this from autozone: https://www.autozone.com/drivetrain/...97818_473541_0

Is the inner race diameter same size as what you have?

That particular carrier bearing fits the 73 and newer 1/2 ton pickups and maybe 3/4 and 1 tons.
