1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up
 

Hi,
Just had to show everyone my project that I've been working on since this last fall. Over the winter not much was accomplished except for sheet metal work to the cab. Currently I'm working on the truck every day, all day and plan to over the summer so it will be back on the road before winter. I got this project truck for free off craiglist completely disassembled. The people I got it from had it in their garage for 4 years and they were tired of looking at it, and wanted to move on to something new. So they gave it to me. I will keep this updated with pictures of everything I do to it.

This is an update of what I have done to it since I first got it...

After I removed the old 250 straight six and granny gear 4 speed manual. They are going to be replaced with a 350 engine and a 700R4 4 speed automatic transmission.

New sheet metal to replace the rusted/missing and automatic floor hump welded in to replace the large manual one.

I converted it over from manual steering to power. It bolts in perfect but the bumper bracket doesn't fit (it hits the pump) so I have to modify the bumper bracket slightly.

The step side fender is finished with the body work. The fender was completely warped all down the top so it took a lot of bondo to shape it back to its original shape.

Started working on the door and I found that it had a very "thick" paint job. There is a ton of bondo build up on it and they bondoed over random holes like the factory mirror holes and other ones. I welded up the holes except for the mirror ones and ground them down. Now for tommarow more paint removal and bondo the dents on the door.

I removed all the paint off the door and welded all the holes....

I pulled out the dents and bondoed them and now the exterior of the drivers door is now ready to be primmed. The cab is also close to being ready for primer.

Unfortunately the radio area is in bad shape someone did a "redneck radio cutout" with a sawzall.

This is my fix for the radio "hole" a plastic cover that fits right in the out line of the hole. I cut it out of an old dell laptop screen case and then sanded the edges. I still need to cut a nice hole in it to fit the radio in.

I need to decide what color I'm going to paint this thing..... I'm thinking blue with white top but the question is what color blue? Please give some ideas/pictures on what would look good. I've been working on the doors some more so I can prime them tomorrow.

I'm going to try to get my priming done this week on the cab and doors if possible. Probably will go into next week though knowing the way things go. More pictures to come soon....

Well I have made some progress I primed the drivers door. Its not perfect (theres still some small dents in the bottom inside of the door) but its good enough for me. :)

I finished the passenger side door today so it is ready to be primed. I also finished the cab so it can be primed as well, finally the hard part of this project is over! There's still lots to do, I have to do the hood, the drivers side stepside fender, and get a tailgate (the one I have is for a GMC not Chevy). If I remember right the front fenders are replacement ones so they won't need much work, anyway here some pictures of the door and cab.

Man, you are just hauling on this thing!

At this pace, you should have no problem getting it done before summer ends.

Its great to hear positive response on this project I can't wait till its done. These are some more parts I need to strip of paint, weld up holes in the hood, and bondo/sand. This project sure has enough sanding bondo....:lol:

I hear you on the sanding. I switch back and forth from body to suspensoin work to break up all of the sanding:D

Not sure on what color blue I'm going to paint it yet but I really need to decide that soon so I can buy some paint. I'm going to try and get the cab primed this week possibly. Any ideas on the color would be good...

A friend of mine painted his truck the same blue as the new Nissan 300s. It's a BC/CC that almost looks like a candy. Here's a pic, it doesn't look near as good as in person but you get the idea.

I haven't had the time to work on it lately because I've been helping a friend with changing the engine in his car. I did manage to get the hood striped and bondoed. I can't paint/prime anything for awhile because the paint booth has a truck in it being repainted but that should be done soon.

Well I got some more done on the 69'. I finished the drivers side step side fender and now it just needs to be primed. I'm almost done with body work and about ready to prime and paint everything. I also dug out two 69-72 replacement fenders out of the attic. They are in good shape except for some small dents and dings. After those are done its time to paint, even thought I haven't decided on what color blue yet but still.
