Modifying a steering box
 

I am working on a '78 Chevy P10 with manual steering & would like to convert it to P/S. I have a '79 4x4 with a P/S box on it for parts. I know that the '79 4x4 will not work as a bolt in, but if I can change the sector shaft from the 2wd box into the '79 4wd box it will then have the correct shaft end for the 2wd pitman arm. I have read on another site that it is a doable swap, but would like to confirm this as a parts swap without any machining of parts. No instructions were given. If this swap will work it would also make for a cheap P/S swap on 4x4 adding crossover steering to a 4x4, maybe.

Just source a used or rebuilt up through 1985 c10 2wd gear box. It should be a 3 1/2 turn lock to lock variable ratio box that will give you nice road feel and assist. If you start swapping internal parts you most likely will run into the difference between fixed ratio and variable ratio issues, as they are NOT interchangeable. These gear box's are outside frame mounted, o ring style lines. Good luck.

After 4 hr of digging, the info I came up with is that the P/S box for the P10 & C10 are 2 different animals & 2 different prices. So my question is, whats the difference between the 2.

Andy, to be honest i thought the "p10" was a typing error. I even looked at the keyboard and realized the "P" and "C" are not even close. Is the p10 like a delivery van?

Remember that through the 60's into late 90's (at least) there are basically 4 different types; inside frame mount, outside frame mount, 3 or 4 bolt mounting flange, and 2wd pitman arm held in place with a huge nut, and a 4wd pitman arm held on with a smaller pinch bolt.

A picture of what is on your p10 originally would help lots!!

Think of it as a '78 ice cream truck (14 feet long with a 102 inch wheel base). Just a box with wheels.
The box is on the outside of the frame, by flashlight, has a 3 bolt mounting & a large nut holding the pitman arm on.
I will try and get my grandson to help me post a picture tomorrow (not that great with computers).

Think of it as a '78 ice cream truck (14 feet long with a 102 inch wheel base). The box is mounted on the outside of the frame, by flashlight, appears to be a 3 bolt mounting & the pitman arm is held on with a large nut. Many C10 (2wd) & K5 (rwd) front suspension parts are suppose to fit it.
I will have to get my grandson to help me post a picture tomorrow, not that handy with computers.
