Oil pan removal
 

I looked online and can't find anything on 2wd. So I'm going to remove the oil pain on my 89 2wd and get it cleaned out since I installed new heads and just want to remove all the sludge on the pan. How difficult is it to remove the oil pan?

Easy with the engine out.
You can remove the pan bolts, but the pan won't clear mains and rotating assembly with the engine in place, you'll have to lift it several inches at the least.

Damnit ok thanks, of course it would be easy with the engine out but in this case it's not.

I was able to get mine out on my 2wd 95 with a 350. It's tight but I didn't need to lift the motor. On the 4wd you have to lift the motor to get around the axle.

I assume we are working on a V8.

I have wiggled and jiggled them out of 2wds. On a few I've had to rise the engine slightly, less than 2 inches.


FYI, on 4wd models, it is a heck of a lot easier to drop the diff than raise the engine.

Sweet that's nice to know, I didnt want to lift the engine, if I can wiggle it out I'll def try it. It is a 2wd 350

I swapped out my 350 two years ago after trying to replace oil pan and timing cover gaskets on the engine I had in the truck at the time. I also replaced the left outer axle gasket on the front diff. Knowing what I know now I can say it would definitely be easier to drop the diff a little bit to pull the oil pan on a K-truck.

The last 93 C2500 we did oil pan replacement on we removed the motor mount pin bolts and used the floor jack and a 2x8 to raise the engine up 4" or so. We also removed the distributor cap and upper fan shroud to avoid damage. We placed 2-2x4 blocks under the mounts and removed the pan. Much easier to do this way then trying to fight getting the pan out IMHO

So at first did u lift the motor by the pan and then set the 2x4 under the motor mounts to hold it in place? Doesn't seem like you can pull it out without having to lift it

Perhaps not absolutely neccessary but made doing the job easier by being able to not only drop the pan down and out but also putting it back together without disturbing the new gaskets and end seals that were rtv'd to the engine block for a good seal.
Step 1- remove distributor cap and upper fan shroud
Step 2- remove motor mount bolts
Step 3- jack up engine with 2x8 on floor jack-use care
Lastly blocks under motor mounts to hold while removing pan.
I don't like any leaks and doing it this way all the gaskets and seals fit perfect with no drip/leak.

Ok well I have the distributor out at the moment and fan shroud too, and exhaust manifold as I'm currently putting new heads on. Another question, what are the round gaskets that come with the oil pan gasket?

Most Fel Pro and Victor gasket sets include gaskets for the oil filter adapter in them, so that would be my guess without a pic. Also if your gasket set has 3 end seals in it carefully match up the old to get the right new one. If only 2 end seals don't worry about that.

Well I finally removed it took me a couple hours, just removed the oil lines going to the ofh and removed the starter and it easily came out. Also the flywheel cover
