71 Cheyenne Super SWB- A Combined Effort
5 Attachment(s)
This is gonna be kinda of a cool project....member 'brn agn' (Jesse) and I have talked about combining our efforts and taking on a project together....I think with the "sickness" or could it be a passion we share for these trucks, an opportunity came upon us and we picked up a 71 Cheyenne Super cab that had rust repair started on the rocker, doors, hood, clean radiator support, truck ralley's, a SWB 67 chassis, and a load of other parts in a package deal.:metal:
Our plans are to clean up, blast, and paint the 67 swb chassis, clean/ update the front suspension (bj's, tie rods, CA arm shafts) add 5 lug disc brakes, clean/ install the 5 lug 3.08 posi rear, 2/4 drop using springs, new lowered shocks....Finish the rust repair on the cab....just needs rockers and corners...So Jesse and I will keep ya updated on progress with this one....We are both pretty excited about this project and hope yall enjoy following along:DOkay....here's some pictures of what we started with.... |
Re: 71 Cheyenne Super- A Combined Effort
I also need to Thank Jesse here too for providing the garage space, tools, and insight on making this project reality...as you can see he's got the 4 post lift in there (Nova on top and Camaro undercover) and pulls his Project Charity Case out of the garage for us to work...he's also done the leg work of getting it to his house and putting the cab up on casters so we can move the cab in and out as needed....

Re: 71 Cheyenne Super- A Combined Effort
So yesterday, we both took the day off of work (who takes a Wednesday off to work on a darn truck?!?!?) Yep....it's that sickness I talked about earlier....
Got the frame into the garage and torn it down to its bare bones....overall a pretty simple tear down...12 bolts out of the front suspension and the front rolled out.....5 bolts out of the rear suspension and the rear end rolled out...ground off 4 rivets and the 3-speed tranny x-member was gone, a little heat and the frame is dimpled for power steering, and removed a couple other misc brackets not needed....now she'll be off to the blasters soon!!!:D http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/IMG_5104.jpg http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/IMG_5112.jpg http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/IMG_5136.jpg http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/IMG_5138.jpg http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/IMG_5134.jpg http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/IMG_5135.jpg |
Re: 71 Cheyenne Super- A Combined Effort
Sounds like fun. What's the plan when finished? Sell and split the profits or share the truck?

Re: 71 Cheyenne Super- A Combined Effort
Geoff and I were able to work on the Super this weekend. First, we sent the a-arms, control arms, frame and cross members to the sand blaster. Here is the parting shot. Hopefully, the next time we see these pieces, they will look much different.

Here are pictures showing the damage: http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/IMG_5102.jpg http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/IMG_5141.jpg http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/IMG_5144.jpg http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/IMG_5145.jpg http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/IMG_5148.jpg |
Re: 71 Cheyenne Super- A Combined Effort
We spent most of the day cutting out rust:
http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/IMG_5150.jpg http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/IMG_5151.jpg Here is the rear cab support: http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/IMG_5158.jpg Most of the support was still solid, so we decided to only replace the flange on the back of the support. After a lot of cutting, grinding, fitting and welding: http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/IMG_5159.jpg Here is Geoff getting the cab ready for the inner rocker: http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/IMG_5163.jpg ...and the inner rocker is tacked in place: http://i973.photobucket.com/albums/a...r/IMG_5167.jpg We ran in to some alignment issues with the inner rocker towards the end of the day, so we wrapped things up and decided to tackle it another time. |

Re: 71 Cheyenne Super- A Combined Effort
Nice progress guys! Looks to be a good start. I like that your garage is big enough for a lift, how high are your ceilings?

If I were to build my own garage, I would plan for a minimum of 12' ceilings, and more lighting, and epoxy floors, and one additional bay, and... :) |

Re: 71 Cheyenne Super- A Combined Effort
Thanks folks...this was a cool day....I finally got my first lesson in welding....I'm thinking I could become one of the best spot welders in the nation soon!!!...maybe Jesse will post up my practice piece;)
I didn't know you took that picture of me grinding away there Jesse....cool shot...my wife was like "WOW, that's cool!!!" Needless to say, all of this took maybe 30 minutes....NOT....this is tedious stuff and I admire more anyone that tackles this....We're taking our time as we learn and do it right....Good progress, but wished we could of gotten a little further....we'll have that frame back soon and then we both are gonna be a bit more eager to keep this one moving!!!:D....Thanks again Jesse |

Re: 71 Cheyenne Super- A Combined Effort
Looks like a great project. It isn't the same one I saw 1972SuperCheyenne with on here a while back is it? You guys are all from NC right? Anyways, looks like you are moving really fast on it. Keep it up!

You are right, we bought the cab, frame, etc from 1972SuperCheyenne. He lives about 30 minutes from me. Geoff on the other hand lives about 3 hours from my house, but has been coming up on his free weekends to work on the truck. Hopefully, we can keep the motivation up and have a decent truck by Spring (assuming that our wives don't lynch us by then!). |
Re: 71 Cheyenne Super- A Combined Effort
That is awesome guys!
I too was fortunate enough to have a local board member that has offered a lot of assistance on my truck. It's great when you can provide assistance to a fellow board member, or anyone for that matter. Keep up the great progress. |
Re: 71 Cheyenne Super- A Combined Effort
