my 50 build... why not?

5 Attachment(s)
Well, i figure'd i'd waste sommore time on here and post up my build.

bought the truck when i turned 14, did a complete frame off resto on an extremely limited budget. then as it goes with any project, i wish i would have slowed down, saved my money and kept doing things right.

upgrades since boughten,

77 elcamino subframe
stock rebuild 283/th400
8.5 10 bolt with 2.73 gears
upgrade to 4.10 with auburn diffy
700r4 with vortec heads and voodoo 268
406 with reworked vortec's and comp XE 274
TCI 700r4
coilovers on the front

upgrades to come, QA1's "pro-street" coilover kit for the rear along with a 4 link setup of some kind. mosier axles, rear end girdle, switching back to 3.08's, a built th350 and yanking out the 406 for a 355. making room for that last picture!! :burnout:

Re: my 50 build... why not?

picked out the 2 possibilities for the snail.

either presision's 7576 with the billet wheel
or a borg warner S400 with 1.10 exh housing.

just got my 4 link/coilover kit in today. SWEET! ill try and get pictures up of it.
i also picked up a 2" drop spindle for the front. it wont be any lower than it is now, but im just doing it for the extra insurance to gain me some shock travel in the front.

got my MSRA back to the 50's registration in.. anyone else going?

Re: my 50 build... why not?

got my parts in,

went to put in my 2 inch drop spindles in this weekend, and i pushed a bushing out of the drivers bottom coilover. so those are off getting rebuilt.

man shes dirty!!

Nothing like SPOOLIN', the one thing I miss about my Typhoon. GOT BOOST!!!!

Re: my 50 build... why not?

thanks mr. tucker..

yeah, this is my first shot with building a turbo vehicle. im going big right away.. figure do it once and do it right... i can always pursuade myself to step in it later.

my buddy is doing a borg warner s475/383 in his 3000 lb 80 vette.. and i guess thats what is kinda gettin me goin that way.. and seein how i should have better streetability with the 500+ boosted hp. :)

Re: my 50 build... why not?

still waiting on my coilovers to get back from QA1. 3 weeks going on 4 waiting.. kinda worrying.

new additions to the rear. i will be adding a 2-3" smooth round tub to the inside of the bed to make room for a 325/50/15 tire. BIIG! 13" section. gotta love that!

just picked up my boost gauge and trans temp gauge, and i still have to pick up the AMS wideband, and a fuel pressure gauge all to match the phantom autometer gauges i have now.

also got a sump for my gas tank and a vent.

just trying to pick up the cheap nessessities for the MSRA.

Re: my 50 build... why not?

well, got the front of the truck all put back together with the drop spindles.

got the bottom of the front bumper 6.5 inches off the ground still with 4 inches of shock travel. so that should do pretty good.

a day later, i tore it back apart. started lowering on the rear end of it. im holding off on the 4 link setup just because of all the other required work needed, and not enough time or money before BTT50's in minnesota.

i initially wanted to drop it 4 inches, but seeing how easy this was, i went a little further, and all in all, it should be around 5 to 5.5 inches of drop in the rear.

not sure if you guys know or not, but the 3/4 ton frame is different than the 1/2 ton. on the half tons, the frame notch above the axle goes just about all the way to the bed wood, on the long box's, theres about 2-3 inches between the two, so it just makes it a little more tricky to get it as low as you half ton'ers.

i figure'd i'd show ya some pictures on how easy this swap was for my 3/4 ton.

before:

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...o16/009-12.jpg

after. all i did was flip the shackle mounts. that alone gave me about a 4" drop. i also removed another leaf from the stack, so now there is only 3 per side.

the 3 red holes need to be drilled, but the yellow one is a rivet hole from the rear frame cross member that im moving back for a bigger fuel cell. then the rest of the holes just drilled from there.

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...o16/011-11.jpg

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...o16/012-11.jpg

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...o16/014-10.jpg

it shows 4 inches here. i will be removing the bump stops, and after the bed, fuel cell, fenders, ect. get put back on, it should be about 3 inches of travel. good enough for now i think!

http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...bo16/015-7.jpg

i just ordered 4* shims for the spring perches to align my pinion angle. and after that, its all done! minus the fuel cell.

not too bad for a days worth of work!

Re: my 50 build... why not?

Man that rig is awesome! Nice job!
I noticed your truck may have had the same paint scheme. I'm wondering what the original colors were including the interior. My truck under the paint looks to be originally blue, tan (gold) interior, black panels, and blue seat. -thanks

nebdrummer 05-14-2010 09:52 PM

Re: my 50 build... why not?

thanks madcanvis. original colors is that green up top, and tan interior. I still have the original bench seat along with some other parts, hood, fenders, grilles, ect.

finally getting to drive it around a bunch, and man, along with modifying something, other problems arise. now im getting really bad axle twist. it sure would be nice being able to just put on some slapper bars or some cal tracks for a simple fix, but my axle is below the leafs. so i guess now it resorts down to installing the 4 link. I just hope things are good till after the minnesota car show. well, they should be fine, i just have to keep my foot out of it for the time being.

How about a pinion snubber like the late 60's Mopars?

would that even work properly with mysetup?? would love to try it if i could find out that it would work..

i snapped a shot of the issue. you can see, the gouge is from that bolt above and forwards, and you can kind of see the marks that the driveshaft bolts made on all 4. YUCK.

nebdrummer 06-04-2010 02:37 PM

Re: my 50 build... why not?

well got my rims and tires in for when i go to install my 4 link.

ill most likely start on it right after BTT50's so i dont end up messing anything up worse than it already is.

plans of now, im HOPING to raise the bed floor like that amazing green 52? (project farm truck i think is it?) thats on here. I think that looks very clean. but the final decision will be made when i start doing my measurements.

wheels, cragar 15x12, 4.5 backspacing. hoping to upgrade to weld's weldstar wheels with the black centers down the road, but i wanted to cheapen it up a bit.

tires.. MT Sportsman S/R 29x15x15. should give for a pretty meaty look!

thats a 275/60/15 on there now.

other updates... the 700 is done dealing. it works fine untill its warm, then it slips bad. im still saving up for a 9" center section, have the 9" ready to go to cut down, mosier axles, and the works.

I will be raising the bed and try to avoid tubs.

just picked up a TH400 built for 1k hp. RMVB, trans brake, and the goods. for now, its just a 25-2700 stall, but it will be upped to a 3500+ for the turbo build. Im hoping to have the 4 link/9", new trans in by the end of winter, but hopefully i can get around to it!

heres what ive been staying busy with lately. no time for my own toys!!!

pretty radical 38' ford business coupe. 9" 4 link, 396 bbc, custom interior, metal work everywhere.
http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q47/tim_bo16/094.jpg

body/gaps/cracks 80' vette. nitrous 385, solid axle/4 link swap, and put on a diet. hoping for -3000lbs with cage and driver still with full interior
http://i133.photobucket.com/albums/q...bo16/049-1.jpg

67 nova (ss clone) full resto. only thing original is top halfs of quarters, inner rockers, trunk, cowl, and roof. 9", TKO600, TCI 4 link/clip, 595hp 420 cubes.
