"Project 72 Monte"

Well our son has been wanting a 70-72 Monte Carlo for awhile, just picked up this 72 this afternoon. Been hit on passenger side front pretty hard but confident we can bring it back to life after sitting in the field for 15 years.

You are lucky the dash is still there as so many Monty's got parted out to SS a Malibu .I want to see this build when you get to it .

Re: "Project 72 Monte"

We are going in with the trailer Saturday morning for the recovery process. He said years ago after parking it there someone came in and robbed the rally wheels off from it and it has been on blocks ever since. It needs a decent amount of work but I just did not want to see another classic go to waste :smoke:

Re: "Project 72 Monte"

i would have the frame and the a pillar chequed out on it

besides that, it looks like a builder ....

GR8-68 05-09-2017 02:57 PM

Re: "Project 72 Monte"

Oh the frame is definitely hit but can be pulled out or I may find a frame section and weld in or possibly a whole new roller frame, the pillar seemed fine but hard to tell until you actually are able to dig into it. In the end even if I can't save it I can well make my money back plus in parts. But I am confident I will have it road worthy once again.

Re: "Project 72 Monte"

Found a list of parts we need for the project Monte already, should be picking them up this Sunday. :metal:

If you took all of those parts together at one time I will come way down on my asking price, but only if you buy all of the parts.
Hood $50.00
Passenger fender $25.00 (needs a little work but a useable fender )
Passenger Door $75.00 ( Complete door with glass )
Radiator Support $50.00
Front bumper $50.00
Total $250

Great start to the parts we need. Almost all of the front end parts :chevy:

What are your plans for it? I doesn't look like there are any other parts that have been removed other than the wheels and the radio. The good thing is, you probably wouldn't use those things anyway unless you are planning on a totally original restoration. Definitely save it and do a build thread on it.

He said it had rally wheels on it when parked there but someone walked off with them about 2 months later, it has been on blocks for the last 15 years. He wasn't sure about the radio, said it may be in the trunk but had misplaced the trunk key. Everything else seems to be there. I drive it by the frame shop next week to see how much to have the frame straightened.

I even have the original owners manual and all :chevy:

Re: "Project 72 Monte"

Well I was going to get the frame straightened but found one at a local yard for 250 so it is much more economical to just buy the frame.. .I have the fever :mm:

I always liked those 70-72 Montes. I stumbled across a Monte forum a while back but I've forgotten the site name. Hmmm. I think there is also a mc forum guy in a small town nearby. I'll have a look when i get home.

Well the recovery process went down yesterday, the rain held off. I had need two roller wheels with tires for the front. Friday morning my wife ran over to a local salvage yard and picked up two for me, to assure that I received the correct parts I needed she called me and put the salesman on the phone I told him exactly what I needed and he said they would pull two and load them in my wifes vehicle. Well guess what !! Instead of the 4 3/4 lug wheels I asked for I ended up with 5 x 5 lug wheels :sumo: so we ended up loading this heavy beast on the trailer with just rims on the front with no tires what a major pita :smoke:

But here is a few pics of recovery and now she is sitting in the bay at the shop. Going to try to get a new control arm on so we can at least roll it around until the main build starts. :chevy:

There is a junk yard just North of the I-40 407 exit that has a very nice monte in the back of their yard ,I asked about it and the owner said it was driven in with a smoking motor , One problem ... it's in the back and there are probably a few hundred cars/trucks and trees between it and any type of road . he said the only way to get it out was straight UP ^ It's burgandy with a black vinyl top pretty sure it's an SS when I saw it it was completely intact . I'll be out that way this coming week and check on it .:chevy:

Yes check on it and snap a few pics if you can. Still looking for a few parts. A local yard has a few frames to choose from at 350 each trying to locate a little better price though if I can.

Well this deal got even sweeter, showed up today to purchase these and he decided if I gave him another 50.00 I could take all he had, So I ended up with this plus the drivers fender plus the drivers door plus all the bottom rocker trim with the rear fender extensions with taillights and trim plus the fan shroud and a trunk lid and even more. WOOHOO !!!!

Possibly off next Saturday to get another whole parts car with a good frame for 400 waiting to close that deal soon :chevy:

Re: "Project 72 Monte"

Nice! They are the sexiest of all the Montes.

There was a super nice one that someone drove to Clemson while I was there somewhere around 2002. It was a 70-72. He was either a drunk or an absolutely terrible driver. The first few months I saw it, it was absolutely rust free and a clean/straight car with what looked to be a Maaco repaint. Every couple of months it would be banged up on a new corner, to where all 4 corners had some pretty heavy damage. It looked like a demolition car after about the 2nd year I saw it. It was always parked behind the library.

Wow, that was quite a smack!

Did the A-pillar/Door hinge mounts move at all, or did just the cowl area get crushed?

It will need a small amount of pull on the cowl area but not to bad, it amazes me how tough these cars were built back in the days. :chevy:

I'm jumping in on this for sure, I love it! My '80 Malibu was in the same condition when I first got it (took a good shot to the right front), it was even very close to the same color. It was my first car at 15 and I spent a good two years working on it to bring it back to life. I had it done to drive to school for my senior year. Looking forward to seeing the progress you and your son make on this Monte.

Thanks Corey, it is definitely a good project.. I pulled the upper control arm off the donor and bolted it onto the 72 so we can bolt wheels and tires on to roll it around anyways. A little more carnage to the wall of shame. :chevy:
