1974 SWB "Clifford" goes to Oklahoma

Picked this up from another member here and thought it was time to start my own build thread.

It is a 1974 SWB. Lowered 5/7. Interior as been redone with Houndstooth seat and interior redyed black. Tach dash and iPod hookup. Vintage air Gen IV. TBI 350/700r4.

The only thing I have done to it so far is I swapped the HD front brakes to LD fronts so I could fit my 18" Boss 338's on it. Since I had to swap spindles to do this I went ahead and put 2.5" Western Chassis spindles on along with 2.5 springs. The rear is sporting a flip kit and drop shackles. It has the 8 leaf spring packs along with spring helper air bags on shrader valves.

It will soon be getting a complete suspension rebuild as the lower control arms are destroyed from scraping.

Here is one of the few pics I have of it so far. I will get some more soon.

Nice truck. I lurk here all the time wanting to build a square body one of these days. I mess around with 68-72 Cutlass' down the road from you in Tuttle.

I hear you Scot. I saw my 63 at Pate last year and felt the same way.

Got the center caps on the front today. just took a little massaging to get them on. Also got my new 5" BS 15x10 rallies painted up.

Ol' truck still looks good. I'd still be beating on it w/the original motor if I still had it.

Did Jon get you any parts w/this deal? I gave hime some stuff for upgrading the front end. The arms were actually damaged mainly from 1 solid hit in a construction zone by my old house. It caved the exhaust & broke both manifolds @ the same time @ about 5mph....

Re: 1974 SWB "Clifford" goes to Oklahoma

Yes, I actually got the lower control arms and all the bushings and ball joints to rebuild the front suspension. He told me but I didn't realize how bad those lower control arms were till I crawled under this thing the other day. I am waiting for him to ship me a few of the suspension parts he didn't have at his house and then I am gonna start rebuilding the front end.

We were supposed to put a notched x-member in it to help w/the lower bushing clearance but I guess he never got around to it. I haven't talked w/him much lately....

How's that work? Sure would like to have more clearance...

Pulls the x-member up higher into the frame rails for additional clearance or drop depending on how you set it up.

Google notched or pancaked crossmember on here for pics & details.

Re: 1974 SWB "Clifford" goes to Oklahoma

Just looked it up. So just to be sure I understand it right.

Right now I have 2.5" drop springs and 2.5" drop spindles. If I pancaked my crossmember say 1.5" I would need to swap to 1" drop springs to keep the same drop? This would give me the same drop but I would gain 1.5" of ground clearance.

This is correct & what I had planned to do.

Got the rallies on. I really like the look. I don't think I like it as much as the Boss' but they do look great. I need to get some trim rings ordered. I'm thinking the 1.5". What do y'all think???

You could put wooden wagon wheels on Clifford and it would look good.

Re: 1974 SWB "Clifford" goes to Oklahoma

I like the 10" wheel on the rear. I use the 88-98 trim rings & are what I have on the current ralleys on my 90 (& what used to be on the 74 ;) ). Not a fan of the spinners though as I prefer the standard OE appearance of the GM bowtie stickers.

Re: 1974 SWB "Clifford" goes to Oklahoma

I think the slots looked much better...the rally wheels are too plain for the truck IMO
