Serpentine set-up/ smog pump question

I am putting an early '90s serpentine belt set-up on my '64, and I have a question for you guys who have that system on your trucks.

I am not going to be running a smog pump, but I have read that there are a couple of different ways to go for the belt.

1): Eliminate the pump and run a shorter (non-smog) belt

2): Buy a smog pump delete pulley and run the stock smog belt.

Any suggestions?

I have also read that if you delete the pump, you also have to remove the idler pulley that's just above and to the inside of the smog pump. You can see it in the picture below:

Last question....I would love to trim away the area of the bracket where the smog pump went. I realize that I would have to leave the two lower attach holes that go into the block, but I think I can trim away about 75% of the lower portion of that bracket. Has anybody done this?

Thanks, guys!

All of the late 80's and early 90's trucks that I have seen had no smog pump and nothing in those in those lower holes from the factory. You shouldn't need a shorter belt or special idler. I'm running the stock serpentine setup from an 89' suburban. I bought the stock belt etc. There are pics of it in my build thread.

I looked back at mine and lower idler is there with no smog pump. There is a picture of it here.

Excellent! That's EXACTLY the information I was hoping for. Now I know just how much of my bracket I can trim off to make it look a little more appealing.

Thank You very much for that info, Greenlee!

They also have a non smog bracket for the pass side of the engine that is much more pleasing on the eyes. I have one in my garage from a 91 and my old 93 had the same setup. I can take a pic this weekend if you want to see one. They might be hard to find out there in Cali smog land though.
