Not sure what I purchased

Bought a "new" 68 GMC 1500 last weekend from the second owner (he new the original owner who sold it to him in 1980. Most everything was kept factory. I am trying to understand what it was as the rear suspension in leaf where most were coils according to the parts I am finding. Also the vin number doesn't match any decoding I am finding.

CE10DP-B45093

Anybody have suggestions in what I have?

Thanks

What does the SPID on the glove box door say?

Leaf springs were standard on Gmc and coils were optional. Just the opposite for Chevy.

Where did you get that VIn number from?
As demian said....check the 'SPID', which is the info/option list on the inside surface of your glovebox....hopefully it is still there, intact and readable.
It has the VIN on it and that should match the stamped VIN on the riveted plate within the drivers door frame.

As for the rear leafs, back then GMC standardized on having 'rear leaf' suspension as the standard suspension...with trailing arm/coil as an ordered option only.
Chevy was the other way around...they standardized on having 'coil' rear suspension with 'rear leaf' as an ordered option.
Your truck having leafs is pretty common on GMC's and if you plan to haul anything it is a better choice.

If you get a chance post up a few pics...including pics of that (inner glovebox) SPID sheet....and we will be able to help you out more.

Welcome.

Re: Not sure what I purchased

Thanks for the information on the leaf springs. There is no SPID tag in the glovebox. I do have the original owners manual as well as the owner protection plan with the engraving plates for the original delivery with the original owners name. The Vin # on that steel plate (attached to the protection plan manual) matches. here is what was on the stamping plate:

307 0000 CE10D-PB45093
RXSTD 3.54 1D156018
TRAT400 GMC2

it was originally in Idaho.

Not set up to attach photos yet. Will need to look into that more.

thanks

Re: Not sure what I purchased

Thanks everyone, I was able to find a vin decoder with GMC codes. Most of the ones I was looking at showed they were the same as Chevy which clearly they are not.

I plan to slowly work on this with my two kids and let them drive it when they get their old enough. I think I will get lots of good information from this site. Probably an overload but too much information cant hurt right.
