How to flip seat back forward

Just picked up a new to me, 71 Cheyenne Super. Wondering how the seat back (bench seat) blips forward so i can access behind the seat area? Thanks in advance!

They don't flip forward.

jbarron is correct.. The seat doesn't "flip" forward.. However, if you need to access the fuel gauge sending unit, you can remove the 4 (2 on each side) seat mounting bolts in the rear and loosen the front 4 bolts.. Tip the seat forward and place a block of wood under each rear "foot".. This will allow you to gain access to the sending unit without fully removing the seat... Replace and tighten the bolts when you are finished.. Don't drive the truck with loose or removed bolts..

I'm no expert, but my bench seat leans forward. I think there's some extensive discussion about this on the forum. I vaguely remember something about it changing based on year?

Either way, pulling the seat isn't very hard if you need to access that area.

67-68 fold forward, 69-72 do not

The change was made in '69 as required by new safety regulations. Same with 2 door cars which were the first to have latches on the front seat backs.

Interesting. Seems like a step backwards though. I wonder if they thought about how do people access the area behind the seat.

Unsure if it’s correct for my truck as it’s how I got it 15 years ago. But my 70 appears to have angle adjusters that just had the lower lock nuts removed and now it flipped forward

That's a 67- early 68 flip seat Later 68 -72 bolted solid with the upholstery covering the arms . :chevy:

Actually GM and most other companies made the change over in 67. My 66 chevelle has flip seats no latch buttons which is correct . I have 67 gto seats that have the button releases. It also has the mounts for the three point seat belts. Even though they weren't installed.

While we're on the subject then, what would make good fold-forward bench seat candidates for swapping into our rigs?

I know that I wish there were a couple more inches between me and the steering wheel; I'm always trying to push myself back.

So a really thick, plush seat would make that worse for me. (and I don't have much of a beer belly either!)

If you need more room between you and the steering wheel, collapse your intermediate shaft and bring the column closer to the dash. Changing a seat will not gain you any room. Once the seatback hits the cab, it isn’t moving back any further unless you angle it forward, making it uncomfortable and unable to lean back.

Thanks for the clarification. When I posted, I thought that it may have been a year or 2 earlier on the cars. We had a '69 Olds 2 door which was the first time I'd seen them.

Thanks Leddzepp! Didn't really think of that!

I've got my brake booster out right now anyway for some major re-wiring at the firewall........................"as long as I'm here"!!

Anyone got pics of moving the neutral safety switch back? It looks pretty close to the firewall already!

Those seat lowering brackets, that someone sells...might help...

Can a non folding seat be made into a folding seat?
