shortened steering column and floor shift conversion..complete

im off all week so i figured i would get a few things done today. this past weekend i converted the old three on the tree to 3 on the floor. bought the spectre floor shift conversion kit which was missing two shifter arm brackets. cnc cut two new pieces at my work and they fit perfectly. loc tited all bolts and put a cotter pin through the bolt that holds the shifter to the trans bracket. i also cnc machined the shifter knob and had it painted. today, i shortened the steering column by 3 inches. looks much better, imho. hope you guys like the updates

Looks good!

Can you show a pic of what your column looks like at the firewall inside and out?

c10monkey, i will take some pictures tomorrow when its light out. I took the nuetral safety switch off. i believe it would be about half way in and half way out of the firewall. to bypass, i bridged the wires together. thanks for the nice replies guys, im very happy with it

i just pulled the seat and flooring out of the 70 gmc i picked up not long ago. it was originally a 3 on the tree, but when i got it, it was auto column and auto trans.

when i pulled the flooring out, someone had put a hole right were your shifter is, and thats the first thing i thought... someone made it floor shift. i actually wouldnt mind getting a 3 on the tree trans back and doing what youve done.

Previous owner did the floor shift conversion on my truck, I need to adjust the linkage (but that's another story). I went out and bough the boot for the floor, looks like we shopped at the same place. From the looks of my stock steering column it looks to be more than three inches. I like it, being 6'1" the stock wheel is in my chest. Pretty neat.

it may be closer to 3.5 to 4 inches, i forgot to measure. pretty easy to do as well. Im 6'3 220 but before i shortened, it was not too close. I just prefer the custom look of having the wheel closer to the dash. I bought the boot along with the shifter at pep boys, the shifter was around 35 bucks on sale, and the boot was 14.99.

secret squirrel, since i have no engine in my truck yet, im not sure what the shift pattern is? i assume yours is a three speed correct? so.....if sitting in drivers seat, where is first, second, third and reverse?

Re: shortened steering column and floor shift conversion..complete

three speed, yes

Shift pattern is H pattern (reverse top left, then down to first. Top right is second bottom right is third,)

I shortened my steering shaft AND dropped it down a little. I chopped my cab so I had to put the bench seat on the floor. I removed the gas tank so I could put the seat as far back as possible. I am 6'1" and 210 and I looked like an ol' grandma with the steering wheel too close and too high. Lowered cab means lowered seat which means lowered and shortened steering column. I love the factory steering wheel. I like the strap on tach cuz thats the way I did it in high school. My tranny then was a T-5 5 speed. Now I roll with a Tremec TKO600 5 speed.

Is there a link or info I can find about shortening my column? I have a factory tilt and auto column that I'd like to keep but shorter would make a world of difference

You need to collapse the intermediate shaft so it looks like the pic in post 15
