What's a fair price for a paint job?
 

When I bought my '79 I had two different neighbors at my shop that ran body shops...now ones in prison and the other got deported. *sigh* I was expecting to get a cheap paint job from one of them, but I guess not. :lol:

I know there's a lot of variables, but lets say I have a clean long bed truck that needs no body work. I want a "cheap" paint job, but I want something better than the $299 Maco special. I can remove most of the stuff on the outside that doesn't get painted, probably take the bed off too. I refuse to do any sanding/priming/spraying myself.

What would you say is a good price to have someone shoot that with a single color, and what's a ridiculous price?

I think that you will find numbers from $1,000 - $10,000+

I myself don't plan on spending more than $2500 or so for a decent job. If that's not possible then I guess i'll learn to paint.

If you did all the prep work and priming etc. and paid for the materials it should not be more than $500. I am going to check on this as I will need my truck painted. I could paint it myself if I had the booth. I Paid $250 in the late 80s to paint my Buick GS in Emron (one color) and it turned out great (show quality) but I did the prep and paid for the materials. The bulk of the labor is in the prep. For example I have worked months getting a tractor ready to paint and the painting takes a few hours.

If all you want is a "stock-ish" paint job go to Macco. Don't get the $299. Talk to them and tell them what you want and get a price.

you'd be amazed at how quickly the quality goes up when a hunderd-dollar bill is handed to the guy that sprays paint at maaco - but don't let the owner see you

Since you don't want to do any sanding but will take things apart you can save a little money and get a better paint job out of Maaco.

If you strip it down so there is next to nothing they have to mask off and you pay for the higher quality materials they have to offer then you can get a $1000 Maaco paint job to look pretty good and it won't fail too quickly.

The taped off things like the mirrors, emblems, marker lights, bumpers, grille, etc... are all points where the paint will peel so if you remove them then many of the failure points go away.

Materials alone on a truck, just outside can easily run 2000 bucks for good epoxy, highbuild, sealer, basecoat, and clear. A good job if one were to strip, prime, block, seal, and paint BCCC can start around 7000, that is at my modest shop rate of 55/hr and figuring on 2000 in materials. That being said if you look over in the 47-5? Section and look for the heading "cheese wagon" you will se a 1952 Grummond I painted that ended up costing bout 3 grand plus materials. We have one car in the shop that is up to 350000 and it's almost ready for paint, although that includes building the chassis and it's well over 3000 hours. There are so many variables

From what i have seen, pretty much $1000 is the least you will pay for an actual decent/pretty good job. I have heard really great things about a paint shop here in portland that does a base/clear with body work for right at the $1000 dollar mark. A buddy knows a guy that had a black camaro done by them and said it was flawless.

macco actually has different stages. the $299 is their bottom dollar job, so even i wouldnt try that one.

i know a guy who paid $750 to shoot his buick white (i know its the easiest to shoot) at macco, and they did a great job. but it really depends on how they prep it and the condition of your current paint job.

no body work and good paint, then you can get away with just wetsanding off the clear and reshoot over that (of course trusting the previous prep work on the previous paint job).

me personally, i wouldnt spend over 1500. but i know i couldnt get away with that with the amount of work needed on my truck. thats why im learning to do it myself ;) lol

Maybe your thread title should have been "Whats a price for a fair paint job?"

I think less than $2,000 will get you a poor paint job, more will get you in the range of fair.

I agree..Middle of the road quality base coat,sealer,reducer,clear and hardener is gonna cost you $600-900 depending on what color you choose.
That is no labor. I just spent $1250 for materials to paint my 69.

You can buy cheap materials, But I wouldnt leave it in the sun and weather very often.

I think I am getting a deal on mine. $5000. This includes frame off and interior, 2 color, all body work, sandblasting, and I have seen his work. Young guy with a lot of talent. Plus I gave him 10 months to do it. Once the body is off I am doing the frame. Comments?

I paid about $3300 last year for the paint job on my truck.

I did all the patch panels, they fixed some hail dings and shot it. You can read some of my body work; any work they did was much better than mine. It's BB/CC and shines nice.

The highlight, though, was that they did it in one week (while I was on vacation). I dropped the truck off (less the pickup box) on a Monday and picked it up on that Friday. Similarly, when the box was ready I dropped it off on a Wednesday and picked it up the following Tuesday.
