A/C Air Conditioning install GEN IV Magnum VintageAir 1965 C10
5 Attachment(s)
I use my truck as a daily driver and it gets pretty hot in SC. My wife also asked me to put A/C in the truck (or else she wouldn’t be riding with me in the summer). So, I set about it.
I corresponded with CoolAir our board member that works for VinatgeAir and he recommended that I use the VintageAir GEN IV Magnum unit because of it’s superior electronic controls. VintageAir doesn’t make a GEN IV kit specifically for our trucks so I had to do a custom install based on their universal evaporator kit. My truck has a LS2 drive-train from a 2005 SSR and I had the OE Sanden scroll compressor. It mounts low on the passenger side, out of sight so I wanted to maintain that. I also wanted to maintain the ECM control of the compressor. The ECM is set up to protect the compressor and to operate the fans to control the high side pressure, so the fans come on only when needed. I also wanted to minimize the modifications to the truck, no dash chopping, excess hole drilling etc. I couldn’t find a real detailed custom A/C install thread for our trucks to I decided to document what I did so it could maybe help someone else in the same boat. The system works great to date. I would certainly recommend VintageAir. Re: A/C Air Conditioning install GEN IV Magnum VintageAir 1965 C10
Wow, you did a really nice job! Can you feel the air blowing on your face with the vents mounted below the dash? My '63 is my daily driver and last week it was around 100 every day. It felt like I was sitting in a dang sauna. My only means of cooling down are a $12 fan that plugs into the cigarette lighter.

Thank you very much for taking time to put this together TR. This is extremely valuable information. Hey thanks for posting in your other thread or I would have completely missed it!

Re: A/C Air Conditioning install GEN IV Magnum VintageAir 1965 C10
Thank you for developing and posting this thread. Excellent information and accompanying photos. The thought and workmanship that went into the project are obvious. I also like the x-brace being bolted in (which had never occurred to me). Admittedly it’s a tiny detail in the grand scheme, but a handy modification for anyone keeping the brace. I’ll be doing that to mine the next time there’s an opportunity.
The drain you designed is certainly more professional looking than many of the holes I’ve seen punched in a variety of floors from back in the 60’s when many took the easy route. |

Thanks for the great write-up TR65! You obviously put a lot of work into it, and it's a great resource for anyone doing this installation.
Your info has now become part of the FAQ http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=468521 And thanks to Woogeroo for reporting the thread as a potential FAQ |

Re: A/C Air Conditioning install GEN IV Magnum VintageAir 1965 C10
Beautiful installation, as usual. One question as I will be doing the same soon, why didn't you use the stock GM compressor?

Re: A/C Air Conditioning install GEN IV Magnum VintageAir 1965 C10
TR65,
OOps. I went back and re-read the complete thread again and see I missed all the info that I asked about. My installation is a 5.3 truck motor out of a 2003 Silverado. I don't know what type of compressor those motors used as the motor I have did not come with the compressor. I too want to utilize the lower stock mount and all the stock serpentine system. I have measured a compressor that is supposed to be for these motors and it looks close. I really enjoy your threads for the detailed info that you are willing to share. I applaud you for those efforts and envy your skills. Dean |
Re: A/C Air Conditioning install GEN IV Magnum VintageAir 1965 C10
wow great detail, we can tell you are a machinist, I have a couple of questions, I have seen other installs and they did not use the standoffs, were these necessary to leave room for the a/C--heater fittings on the side closest to the firewall...??? or are there other things that interfere with moving things closer to the firewall......?
thanks, for the write up it is great. Kieth |

Mine is mounted as high and as far toward the driver as possible. The left end of the evaporator is against the hump so it won't go back any further. You can move the whole thing as far to the passenger side as possible, and it still looks like it won't clear the hump. The only other GEN IV that I have seen in our trucks that show the mounting is JGROSS which is referenced in your thread. If you look at the picture of the cab with the dynamat in it you can see he has standoffs that look about like mine. He mounted closer to the passenger side and blocked off the passenger fresh air vent. That puts the floor vents all on the passenger side. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=405551 I could have just used some threaded rod to make the standoffs, I just happened to have the aluminum round bar. I was going to use one of the VintageAir compact units but Coolair advised me to go with the GEN IV. It really works well, the controls are very nice and I am very happy with it. Thanks for the kind words and good luck! TR |
