Power steering swap help
So I have the pump all mounted, and got the steering box mounted with capnfabs plate. Lined up awesome. The box is off a 84 pickup. I got capnfabs steering tube adapter as well. My question is, which steering coupler do I need? When I look it up, for an 84, it shows 2 different ones. One with 25 splines and one with 17. I know I could count them but the truck is at my parents and I’d like to order it tonight.

That depends on your box. Your going to have to count the splines.

The spline count will be either 30 or 36. Since the splines to not go all the way around the shaft, you will have to count the splines half way around and then X2. The diameter will be either 3/4" or 13/16". The 3/4" is more common.

So I was just over at my parents house dropping off my boat trailer. I climbed under and counted all the splines thinking that would be enough info. Of course I'm wrong again apparently. Either way, I got 25. I'm going to have to go back and pull the wheel so I can really get an accurate "half" count and measurement I guess.

The more I think about it, and looking at Rocks pic, I count 25 splines on it. Same as mine. Do the 3/4 and 13/16th shafts have same number of splines? Could I just assume that mine is 3/4s like Rocks since it has same number of splines?

So I got the correct steering coupler, doorman part no. 31011, for 1984 K5/C10. Put it all together nice nice. Then started the wrestling match with the hoses. Got them connected, but definitely not a permanent situation. Which leads me to my next question for the experts. The pump is off a 70 nova 250. What is the best option/method to route the hoses to the steering box ? Right now the soft hoses are rubbing against the edge of the sheet metal. I’m thinking I need longer hard lines out of the box and then somehow couple them to the existing hoses on pump. I’m sooooo close to success I can smell it!

Sorry, I got ahead of myself. After seeing your picture and description, I looked at mine and measured it as best I could. Seemed close enough to 3/4" to call it good. Did a search online and found it at advance Auto parts. In their product description it's 3/4", 25 spline steering coupling assembly. Same part for both 2&4wd 1984 1/2 tons.

Your '70 steering pump will have a SAE style fitting for the pressure hose but your steering box is Metric with an o-ring. You can change the pressure fitting in the pump, have a custom hose made, or purchase adapter fittings. Typically the inner fender needs a little trimming for the power steering hoses.

Thanks for the reply cap. I got the adapter fittings for the steering box. My dilemma is with the routing of the hoses and the bend of the hard lines on the steering box side. I ordered a pair of hoses for a 70 c10. I'll see if those fit better. At the very least, they look like they have more hard line to work with and I could bend them to "help" them fit.

The operation was a success. The hoses I ordered did not fit as exactly as I would've liked but it did at least give me hard lines past the sheet metal and no trimming. Can now steer with one finger. I'm so psyched to drive it around. Gotta get plates for it now. I'll see if I can get some vid up.
