engine clearance issue

4 Attachment(s)
i just installed my motor and trans into my 67 chev and theres almost no clearance inbetween the valve covers and the firewall, im worried that under torque the motor will move and the valve covers will hit the firewall

theres pics below you can fit maybe a quarter inbetween them thats how much room there is, will i need to move my motor ahead? how can i do this? im using the stock motor mounts in the stock location the trans is also bolted to the crossmember, i cant put smaller valve covers on as it needs the clearance for the rockers, i can get more or specific pictures if anyone needs them

Re: engine clearance issue

Does the 67s have two sets of motor mount holes in the frame? Looks like you may have them in the rear holes.

Re: engine clearance issue

Yep, need to move the mounts to the forward holes.

Re: engine clearance issue

That moter is way to far back. Hell it dont even cover the crosmember. You need to move the mounts up to the front set of holes in the frame.

Re: engine clearance issue

Your engine is mounted to 6 cyl towers. You need 8 cyl towers to mount in the front set of holes. They are different from each other, and will not interchange. the regular chevy short valve covers will fit in the 6 cyl position.

Re: engine clearance issue

Those are the tall valve covers..

These frame stands looks to be the right ones, they just need moved to the forward holes.

I could be wrong but I think the 6cyl stands are the same as v-8 with the exception of the 292. The 230 and 250 I-6 I believe are the same.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Re: engine clearance issue

How do you tell the difference between the 6-8 cyl mounts? I just bought some and hope they are not 6 cyl? Anyone got pics?

Re: engine clearance issue

i used the 250 i6 stands in the same place for my 305
but i had smaller valve covers and plenty of clearance and didn't want to have to change driveshaft length and gearbox crossmember mounts.
plus i plan to go back to i6 .
you may have distributor issues as well if you use anything other then a standard one.

The 6 cyl stands will not fit in the front set of holes and the 8cyl won't fit the rear set.

makes sense cause if you lookat the original pics , if you just slide those mounts forward there is no bottom hole in the crossmember.

Re: engine clearance issue

so apparently this was a 6 cyl truck, if i move my motor ahead my drive shaft will be too short wont it? if i move my mount one hole ahead there isnt a hole for the bottom, if i get a pair from a v8 truck will they work?

unfortunately yes the driveshaft will be short, plus gearbox crossmember mounts will be further forward.
is it a floor shifter-cause that will move forward
clutch pivot shaft-ditto

good fun working on these old trucks-aye

Re: engine clearance issue

its an automatic on the column but i dont know if was orginlly or if it was a 3 ott, so im assuming id have to drill new holes for the cross member because they wont be in the frame, plus get v8 engine stands and a driveshaft from a v8 truck

Re: engine clearance issue

just went out and had alook under mine
4spd manual and the xmember is rivited in and would have been a bastard to move forward as its right where the chassis rails turn up steeply.
there are a series of holes futher back the chassis which is where i presume the auto x-member would be so you may be lucky there
i can't be any more help sorry.

Re: engine clearance issue

thanks for looking, mine is bolted in since its an auto i will have to check and see if there are any more holes, my dad said to take a ballpeen hammer and smack the firewall in so i have clearance, his logic behind this is that im not keeping the motor in this truck because im building a shortbox so why spend money on a truck im not keeping he said lol i wasnt going there with him

Re: engine clearance issue

Moroso tall valve covers and HEI ignition will fit in the I6 position. I can't even install Edelbrock Elite tall covers on past the rockers and firewall but the Moroso work great.

This link has a loi of good motor mount and stand information. Post #18 by Tx Firefighter has some very helpful pictures.

As to knowing what your truck had for an engine is easy. Check the VIN.
CS is a I6 gas
CE is a V8 gas

Re: engine clearance issue

my 67 was a 6 cylinder truck and i had the same issuse when i tryed to put on tall valve covers. I got v8 stands and there was already holes for the auto crosmember in the right spots.

The VIN will be located on the SPID label (if you have one) inside the glove box door. It is also repeated on the door post data plate. The CS or CE prefix will start both the model number and VIN numbers. Your vehicle title or registration will have the numbers as well.

Re: engine clearance issue

yup i have the I6 stands in the back position, thanks tim for that thread tx firefighters post was exactly what i was trying to find out, now i need to buy some v8 stands and hopefully i wont have to drill holes for my auto crossmember and i guess i will have to buy a different driveshaft too

1972BackInBlackC10 09-23-2012 12:18 AM

Re: engine clearance issue

yea my spid is long gone i will have to use the plate on the door, is there anyway to tell what trans it came with as well?

SS Tim 09-23-2012 12:40 AM

Re: engine clearance issue

Now it is detective time. Without a SPID or a build sheet all you can go on is what you have or it appears you had. Temper that with know option and power train combinations. Firewall holes are also helpful. Do you "know" if your truck is an original automatic truck. What is the steering column like?
