Swaping to a 700R trans
What is required to move the shifter back for this swap it had the stock TH350 since my engine was not the original I went with a GM crate motor and swapped to a 700R for the overdrive. The 4wd shifter will need to be moved back any tips on how to do it right?

Move the engine forward. You can keep the shifter in the stock position and not modify your drivelines.

Agreed - engine forward 1-7/8". It's what I did too.

I assume the engine and TH350 are in the truck?
Get engine hoist to support engine - unbolt engine crossmember bolts and maybe the engine mounts. Unbolt TH350 as normal to remove. When out, or while pulling TH350, slide engine forward 2+ inches - this is more than enough room now to jack the 700r4 up and to install it to the back of engine. Now slide the engine/trans back a little bit to bolt the the Tcase. Make sure you have everything where you want it now drill the frame for the new holes where the engine crossmember sits. Bolt it up. Tighten everything up. Done. |

Even easier.
Get the trans and engine mated and put them in the truck. Get the trans bolted to the Tcase just like normal. Before you do this get the engine crossmemeber unbolted and slid forward ~2". Now get the crossmember/engine mounts bolted up to the engine. Drill your holes. bolt her up. |

My frame on my 72 actually has holes in the forward position. I have heard of people using these when converting. Notice the second set forward of where my crossmember is bolted in the picture.

My 71 has those holes too but from what I recall not ALL the holes lined up correctly.
Maybe you'll have better luck. |

What transfer case do you have ? NP205 ? I missed what year and vehicle you have.....

On my swap, I only moved the engine forward about 1" and then heated the 4wd shifter with a torch and bent it forward to fit in the original floor board hole. Worked fine for me. I did not want to move the engine the full 2" forward. I preferred as much weight shifted to the back as possible. I also used the spacer between the transmission and the NP205 rather than installing a shorter output shaft in the 700R. I chose the spacer to give the front driveshaft additional clearance without hitting the tranny pan.

The stock bracket bolted to the frame can be swung forward to realign the linkages.
Just loosen the top bolt, take out the lower bolt, redrill new hole and bolt in lower bolt. It 's not perfect but has worked for me since I did this conversion back in 1999.
