Going aftermarket with radio

The truck has a equalizer to, can I disconnect the head unit that the radio and equalizer is plugged into and just do away with all 3 items.
I'm new to these 90s trucks. Also removed the busted up dash out of my 91 and hoping to install a 94 dash out of a donor truck....
Thanxs

Hello. It's been a while since I've done one of the early style trucks but yes, you can eliminate all the factory equipment and just use aftermarket. Actually, you have to eliminate the the factory equalizer in order for the speakers to work with an aftermarket radio. I do remember it was a pain in the ass to remove because it's really tight behind the dash. You'll end up with a nice pocket for storage where the EQ was.

Best thing to do it stop by a car stereo shop and either have them do your install or at least tell you what has to be done. You'll need the complete install kit with all harnesses, pockets and dash kit. Be prepared, it's a lot of work to do by yourself or will cost a bit more to have them do it...

I've never seen an aftermarket radio in an 88-94 truck that didn't REQUIRE removal of the equalizer. That's where the aftermarket radio will go. I don't think anyone makes an aftermarket radio that fits where the stock radio comes.

Yeah, my post is a bit confusing. The pocket replaces the factory radio and the aftermarket stereo replaces the factory EQ.

Re: Going aftermarket with radio

I did a complete dash swap and the 94 already had a aftermarket radio installed in the dash
I just need 1 of those pocket to go in place of where the original radio was located.
