To those who've installed a new windshield.....

.....did you go with an aftermarket windshield sealing insert strip or use a GM one? Reason I ask is because I have some chrome NOS GM windshield sealing insert strips and I'll use them if the aftermarket ones are crap. If not, I'd rather used aftermarket and keep my NOS ones on the shelf.

Are you talking about the gasket or the chrome inserts?

The chrome insert band. I am not 100% sure what years it is "correct" for-but I wanted to use it in my 86 K10. These are still new in GM boxes but I didn't write the years applicable on them.

Well I used the precision gasket but it was without the insert. I'm very please with it.

Hmm...I just like the chrome bead all the way around it....I planned to use the same on the rear slider window seal too.

They have it too. I just didn't want that option.

Where can I buy a chrome insert?

Does the insert have a function, or is it just trim?

Its a round-ish insert that presses into the windshield seal to keep it sealed tight between the channel and the glass edge. I was just inquiring as to whether the aftermarket ones are as good of quality as the GM ones.

I went to Safe-Lite auto glass in Alton, Illinois. New windshield with antenna imbedded, new gasket, new chrome strip all for $236.32 installed.

Ha, lucky you Matt. I've looked on and off about replacing the windshield in mine and the glass companies around here won't supply the correct rubber window seal that has the chrome strip. They just have plain black.
I've seen these correct moldings advertised at a few parts houses, but the glass companies won't use it if I buy it.
Since they won't supply the correct chrome molding, I just tell them I'm not changing it. The truck stays the way it's supposed to be, I'll live with the chip. Eventually when I want the windshield changed, I'll just have to do it myself when I find the time.

Or have the new windshield installed with the black trim strip. Then once back home replace it with the chrome one. There not that hard to swap out.

I wish I could get away with it on my 86 C20, the chrome strip has turned brown. The clear shield has pealed off the chrome. Front and back, the rubber windshield glass and back glass is so hard I would never get the trim strip back in once removed.

So on my list new front windshield, after a rock hits it. The rear is easy.
