1970 C40 Build
Just picked this up this week. Havent really dug into it yet but I know it's a V8 with most of the parts still with it. Trying to figure out what parts cross over from other models since all the parts sites I use go from C30 to C50 and skip this model. Not entirely sure of my plans yet but will update as i go !

Re: 1970 C40 Build
Most C-50 parts should fit your C-40.
Welcome to the site and keep us posted on it. |

Re: 1970 C40 Build
Trying to decipher the VIN so I have a better handle on the truck :
CE43DP159114 4x2 V8 ??? (4) Cab and Chassis 1970 Pontiac Plant Any decoder I've tried to use wont let me since the VIN is too short and most other ones on here are for smaller trucks. If anyone could correct any information that might be wrong that would be great, I've struck out and kind of pieced it together lol |
Re: 1970 C40 Build
Cool truck, don't see C40's very often. I've only seen one around here, local junkyard had a '69 C40 several years ago. If I could have saved it I would have, but had no extra money back then.
I think the D in your VIN might be a 0: C Conventional cab 4x2 E V8 gas engine 4 13,5 to 18,000 GVW 3 Chassis Cab 0 1970 P Pontiac plant |
Re: 1970 C40 Build
A C/40 is just a light duty C/50. Many had 250 6's or 307 V-8's, and they were regular light duty pickup truck engines. I think only transmission available was a CH-465. Many were sold with a factory installed 9' or 12' stake bed. Low cost truck for farmers, ect..

Re: 1970 C40 Build
Thanks for shedding a little more light on the truck. I know it's got a V8 so I'm assuming its the 307 then; Previous owner said it had a 4 speed with a 2 speed rear.
I know the path I want to go with it. It's going to get bags and wheels. Clean it up some. Undecided if I want to toss a modern drive train in it or just keep what's there. Tossing ideas around for the back half of the truck. Everyone does the stake body, flat bed or something custom. I'll think of something original. I appreciate everyone's comments and help thus far ! |
Re: 1970 C40 Build
Sounds good! My 1970 service manual also lists the light duty 350 with a 2 barrel carb as an option, best bet is to check the casting numbers.

Re: 1970 C40 Build
It's definitely going to be a learning experience. What I'm gathering is that a lot of the parts from the light duty trucks do transfer over the the c40/c50, If I've read correctly?

By the way, make sure your doors are from a C-50 or C-60. They look the same, but they are different (unless you want to do some modifying). |
Re: 1970 C40 Build
The doors are in the barn on the Previous Owners property. Waiting for the weather to clear up a bit so I can bring her to storage, so i'm only going off what I saw when I was there. VIN # doesn't seem completely right so I'm being patient until I get the truck in my hands to see what I've got.

Re: 1970 C40 Build
Well Apparently I don't listen very well. The truck does in fact have a 350. The '71 C10 I' might be buying from the same person has the 307. Oops lol

Re: 1970 C40 Build
I might yank the 350 and put that in my C10..maybe. I do know that this will be getting a fresh and newer drive train (6.0 or 8.1), Air, some big wheels and some sort of bed on the back. A simple cruiser.

Re: 1970 C40 Build
Nice but what bolt pattern are those? I don't think they are the same as the truck are they?
|
Re: 1970 C40 Build
Nope, they're not the same but I'm more than likely going to change up the rear end to something newer, with adapters these will fit just fine.

Re: 1970 C40 Build
Taking on another build with my father that's a little more important and the c10 I picked up with this has precedence over this. So, instead of sitting on it I'd rather see someone else enjoy it. That's all lol
