Changing column in my 77 C10

Fellas,

Does anyone know of a reason why an automatic non-tilt column from a 1976 c10 would work in my 1977 C10? The problem seems to be where the intermediate shaft hooks to the bottom of the column. The splines on the 76 column aren't as long as the ones from my old 77 column. Therefore the intermediate shaft won't slide on the splines far enough for the bolt to go through the U clamp that holds the two pieces together.

Not sure if that makes sense or not. If not, I'll take to some pictures tonight.

Thanks

They should both be the same.

However, these steering columns have a telescopic collapsible shaft (same idea as the telescopic section of the intermediate shaft). So if the 76 column was dropped or bumped hard enough on it's end, it could have pushed the shaft in a bit.
