Longhorn update

A couple of you are actually interested in this engine swap, and a few of you are responsable for it. (at least my wife blames you guys for it anyways)
I FINALLY got the Ponticrap out of there, and it was pretty interesting. I always thought the engine looked a little off center in the frame rails, and it was. They had installed 1/2 inch spacers inbetween the motor mounts and engine block on the drivers side. I guess that is one to put i the back of my head for the caddy engine if it becomes an issue.
Here are some pics.
Here it is magicly rising from the framerails. ;) Yeah, it's one of those rent-a-hoist units. Pretty cool to use, but a PITA to back up with.(and I towed trailers for 7 years in the army...these are just real short trailers). You can see my 'gentle persuassion bar'.
Heh heh heh.... I love that thing.

Once out, I saw the rubber in this drivers side mount is pretty hashed. Guess I need to see about replacing that huh?

Aren't there supposed to be bolts in the lower portion of the towers????

Loaded up, ready to go. It'll be a Honda door in 2 months...going to the scrap guys right after I get off of work tomorow.

Denny 08-08-2002 09:52 PM

Neat pictures:) Can't wait to see that stump pulling caddy motor in there.

fine69 08-08-2002 09:59 PM

Ha, why did you rent a puller when you coulda borrowed mine for FREE? You putz.

Longhorn Man 08-08-2002 10:06 PM

LOL, one, i didn't know you had one/willin to loan it out...two, I think the gas woulda cost the same as the rental.
:D thanks though...shmuck. ;)

toms68cst 08-08-2002 11:45 PM

LOL, Don't you have a big old oak or elm tree and a come-along to use for motor lifting??

Super Chevy 08-08-2002 11:50 PM

looks good... Keep us detailed on the install of the new motor....

Longhorn Man 08-09-2002 12:07 AM

LOL...No trees here. Have one in the front yard, but then I'd have to rent a come-along!!
Now comes the fun part, I get to try to clean up the chassis real good so i can paint it and throw a fit when I scratch the p!ss fabbin mounts for the 425. I wonder how far the wrences will fly on that one.
Found out the TH350 biscut is pretty kerfagled too. When I pulled the engine off the dowels, the tranny flopped over onto it's side like a stupid dog wantin rubbed. I guess I'll be gettin one from the junk yard for a couple bucks, and getting the poly mount out from under the GMC. ;) That mount will have been on all 3 of my trucks.

fine69 08-09-2002 01:26 AM

How long did you rent the puller for? You coulda borrowed mine for weeks.
If you need a tranny dont waste money on a used one. If you are using a T350 or T400 i can get it rebuilt for you for $200 bucks. No tax. Thats with a shiftkit, rebuilt torque converter. Comes back lookin like new. All new guts. And a 1 year guarantee. Let me know if you need one rebuilt.

68 Suburban 08-09-2002 01:31 AM

Are you going to at least clean that caddy engine?

stllookn 08-09-2002 01:32 AM

Andy, Great to see someone else getting greasy and dirty and having fun...I could watch that all day long. Looks like the viewing area is already set up...no cooler though. What's with the gold and white paint? Are you looking for a '68 front clip? Maybe I should do that with my '68...50th Longhorn dually anniversary!!!!! How cool?

colohusker 08-09-2002 01:52 AM

Looks like fun, can't wait to pull my tired 350 out and put a 454 in! By the way, my wife has seen your website, and saw your picture with the engine tonight. All she said was cute legs... just thought I'd pass that along!

Huck 08-09-2002 07:56 AM

Andy---nice to see someone other then me full of crap!! Hey noticed that you have some nice lawn furniture you could place an engine in for cleanup. :D

Longhorn Man 08-09-2002 05:58 PM

Fine69, I think I may take you up on using your hoist when I am ready to slap it in there in a week or two...I only paid 20 bucks to have the puller for 24 hrs...plus a few bucks for the grinder. To get the hoist for 3 days will be $50. As for rebuilding a tranny, 2 bills sounds like a good deal, but for now I'm going to have to hold off. I'm planning on running the TH350 that is in it right now, and as the $$ becomes avalable, get the TH400 rebuilt and then get the driveshaft hacked and ballanced. Would love to do it all at once, but 200 to rebuild, another 100 to shorten and ballance, new yolk is about 25 at a junk yard...it adds up pretty quickly...
68Sub...the caddy will be looking awsome by the time it goes in there. That is why it is taking so long to do it, I am detaling everything I can while it is in pieces.
stllookn I thought about that, but I'm going to stick with the GMC grill that is on the SWB...the trim to make it look like a 50th would be more than I could ever afford. I'm still not sure of what color it will be, I have all kinds of ideas in my head...but more likely than not, it will not be gold and white.
colohusker...tell your wife to call me this evening...she already has the number. Just don't have her calling collect this time. ;) (J/K man)

Hey Huck, my dad wants to know if you are refering to his boat. If so....

colohusker 08-09-2002 06:10 PM

Don't think so! I'm not going to have that on my phone bill! ;) I'll tell her to pick up a phone card on the way home...

Longhorn Man 08-09-2002 06:50 PM

LOL!!!! I was hopin you'd take that lightly. :D

Blue_71 08-09-2002 06:52 PM

how the heck you stay so clean???? i got that dirty putting the plugs in the 89 tonight!

colohusker 08-09-2002 06:58 PM

I know. I get dirtier than that when I check the oil.

Of course I'd take it lightly!

Longhorn Man 08-09-2002 07:08 PM

Josh...I got filthy if you look at what all I did there.
I unbolted one tranny bolt, 7 motor mount bolts in all, and used a grinder to cut the exhaust pipe. That's it.
Wait, i had to mess with the tranny cooler lines too.
Look at how much crap is under the hood of an '89. That's why you get so nasty.

Blue_71 08-09-2002 09:50 PM

yup yup, oil cooler, air, some kinda do-hiki running from the air cleaner to the fender, TOO MUCH CRAP!!!!!!!!! LOL now if ya look under the hood of my 4x4, i have absolutly nothing in there and it looks clean,a nd i have less in blue and its looks messy, i dont get it?!

racedvl 08-09-2002 10:42 PM

LOL!!! Boy you sure have nice green grass!! :D

Longhorn Man 08-09-2002 10:47 PM

Yeah, but the bummer is i have to move the front clip every 2 days to keep it green, and then i need to move it on grass cutting day....
I hate not having a garage. :(
