Believe it or not, just soap and water and Scotch Brite pads.

Actually, step it up to the HD auto body style of pads.

Picked some up at Walmart, with a nice handle too.

In some areas, there are blue and tan under the primer, before the white.

It's time consumings, but with some cold ones.....it gets done !!

cut the scotch brite pad into a circle and use it on a da sander alot faster!!!

ChiefRocka 08-15-2012 05:29 PM

Re: '62 GMC Suburban "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....

I thought about that....

In fact, they sell them for your drill, but I think a DA would be better...

Re: '62 GMC Suburban "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....

Cool!

Is he going to cut the LCA's for you also?

If I may make a suggestion......I would cut a slight step in the OD of those collars. That will serve 2 purposes. One, it will help keep the collar in plane with the LCA. Second, it will give you a safety factor if the lip is placed on the bottom side. That's just how I plan on doing mine when the time comes.

I hear what you're saying about the a collar that is a good idea. I'm confident in my welding that they will never come out of the lower a arm.

I should be able to keep it nice and square.

I plan to enlarge the opening myself.

I know the dude is really busy but I'm gonna go in asking about the collar.....

Well I'm back with only a few pics. Not time lately for much, but making ends meet ... ;)

I need to order some more spot weld cutters, but decided to try out HarborFreights $5 one. Works great ... but at 3/8", its just too dam big.

For under the cowl, I can get away with it ... still too large of a diameter.

Both fresh boxes need to come off to repair some rot on the body...

Looks like you are having fun there.

My truck has slowed down also. Waiting for an under dast harness from Greg so I can do some of the wiring. Need a upper radiator hose which is hard to find so I think I am going to order a stainless flex hose but don't know if I want the chrome ends or just hoses. $78 with ends and $41 with rubber hoses.

ChiefRocka 08-24-2012 07:49 AM

Re: '62 GMC Suburban "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....

Personily, I like the flex hoses with just the rubber couplers. One word of caution, the hose clamps that come in those kits suck. Replace with decent ones.

I think for the way my engine compartment looks rubber ends would be better. It keeps the theme. Plus at almost $37 less more appealing.

I'm curious about the modification???

I just bolted a 78 burb xmber to my 62 frame - so I'll be tuned in for sure.

I'm digging it - subscribed

Re: '62 GMC Suburban "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....

Well, this weekend I was able to get back on the Burb for a few.

Started by getting the body/frame level to ground ... to be able to take some measurements.

Testi fitting the crossmember. Notice these tabs used for early style brake lines, still in stamping of 78 crossmember ... glad they are there !

Re: '62 GMC Suburban "Rust"oration, Patina Build.....

After installing, I noticed the underside FRONT TWO bolt holes line up perfectly, and well as the upper a-arm studs are close, as well as indintations for a-arm clearance.

After checking Mark's how, and chatting with him....he seems to recall the REAR hole lineing up.....Hmmm ?? He also mentioned he did his 15 yrs ago, and doesn't recall exactly ...

I never did mark the spindle location to ground, so I'm gonna slide the torsion frontend back on to get a measurement, no biggie...

UNLESS SOMEONE HERE CAN CONFIRM THE FRONT TWO ARE CORRECT ??

You didn't have all of them crossed, did you ??

Well I recieved bad news from Gary the machinist.

He measured the pistons (.060) over ... but the block measured out .062...

He felt it was .002 too much ....

Guess not close enough for the rings to seal ??

Really sucks, as this was the OG engine to my '63 C-10, and wanted to use it as a temporary Burb engine...then stick it back in the truck when the time came...

:waah:
