You have a gift for understatement Martin!

Need to get this finished this weekend and get the door and fender into the garage for painting. Its already getting too cold outside for this kind of work.

Think I'll switch to plumbing and electrics over the winter and a test fit of all the new bed panels and fenders BEFORE I paint them!

But its now getting to cold and definitely too dark to work outside at night so the door, fender and quarter panel are now in the garage for finishing and painting.

Also decided to put the radiator in tonight. Fed up falling over it on the workshop and there is more likelihood I damage it in there than in the truck where its supposed to be!

What is the saying "there is no substitute for cubic inches"!

Ive found a 15.5" push fan that should fit (and that was with the first supplier - still others to check). Only concern is it may stick out a little far but in fact I have 50ish mm that I can push the fan into the engine bay is necessary though I don't think it will be.

Gaps are good but I hope I can get everything back in that position and I'm worried that the build up of paint may cause problems - its that tight!

The big challenge you'll have is generating enough CFM to cool that big block, pull fans work best and even better with a shroud. push fans are generally less effective. I've a 17" on mine rated at between 2500 and 3000 CFM it's in a full shroud so i'm hoping it's nearer the top figure. I would think you'll need 4000+ for a big block. Buy a good make too (like SPAL for instance) most cheap chinese stuff makes nowhere near its stated CFM.

This is one situation where size really does matter :lol: both radiator and fan.

That's good info Ian, thanks. I know little about fans or their size requirements so this gives me something to go with.

I had a look at it tonight and I can get a 15" fan in but that's about it, possibly 16 at a squeeze but there is no room to move the engine back further. It is literally as far back as I dare take it.

Need to have a wee look on here and see if there are any links to others and how their cooled their big blocks!

Not a good first search. The most Demon Tweeks list for a 16" SPAL fan is 1918CFM and that's a pull fan. Good news is there isn't much difference between their pull and push.

I reckon I can fit 2 15" SPAL, one sucking and one blowing. There is just enough space to fit one inside, though I may need to remove the ally cap on the electric water pump and replace it with the original to gain a bit of space. The SPAL fans are only 51.1mm deep and I think I can get that in.

Only thing even with 2 fitted, one pulling and one pushing that's still only a combined 2177 cfm.

I'll need to see if I can find out what my dad had on the engine when it was in his Cobra.

On my '66 Suburban with a big block I used two 12" puller fans side by side. They were the highest cfm I could find at the time.

Definitely no space for 2 12" fans but I could get 2 10" in. Possibly 2 pulling and 2 blowing. That would get me about 3000-3500 cfm.

Something else that I need to do to the front fender and that's fill the two centre fixing holes and reposition then.

In once case I can only see half the fixing in the inner fender and in the other its barely visible. Just another little job needing doing.

Not sure of the problems in the fender or inner fender, though none of the front fixings in the fender line up with those in the grill support.

That is a common issue with the aftermarket body panels. They all need reworked to be able to bolt them together. They don't just bolt together right out of the box.

I did expect to have to rework new panels but I don't think one has even come close to fitting. I cant believe its so hard to make replacement parts for old cars.

Its not just an issue with the US parts. Ive never had a part fit a UK car without some reworking.

If these wont pull through enough air I can add the same in push or a single 16" pushing from the front.

2 10" pulling through are as much as I can get in I think, though there is one last thing I can try and that's stager them diagonally. That way I may be able to fit in 2 11" or 12".

Im not actually ready for these but I want to find the final position for the motor so I can fit the transmission mount in its final position and after I do that I cant move the engine to allow for the fans.

This one is only 2 1/2" deep and will push or pull. Claims to be 2150 CFM, it's good value if it is.

That may not be a bad option Ian. At that price what have I to lose really. I was out tonight sizing things up and I do have space to fit the two SPAL 10" or even 12" cape and corner but not side by side (Good use of 10" dining places if you ask me).

But I probably only have a max 70mm to the water pump etc. Now I can save some space there but I also don't have the engine in its final position. Its OK front to back but I need to raise the transmission meaning the alternator and PS pump pullies will come a fraction closer to the radiator. Think I'll still get away with 2.5" but it will be close.

Anyway, today is my birthday :barn: And what did I get? A new welding mask - completely perfect!

So where did I go? Yes out to the garage where better (actually its also my youngest daughters birthday so nobody bothers about me anyway. Worse its my youngest sons birthday on Saturday! And he is 18 this year so double whammy! Dad is no longer important - anyway now I'm finished feeling sorry for myself (Not really) I'll get back on with my update).

So this weekend saw me back at the painting again.

Both the passenger side fender and quarter panel in epoxy then primer (oh and the rears both stone chipped).

Also got the transmission cross member remade. Wasn't happy with my first go so I redid it.

Although its not fitted yet it did allow me to put the engine in its final position and although I do have a little rearward movement possible its still very close to the radiator giving me potential issues with the fans.

So I thing I will get the mounting brackets on the radiator re positioned such that they are flush with the rear of the radiator. That will gain me a full 10mm, all I need.

To be honest the fitting of these mount is crap (not even on each side) and the angle of the mounts is not 90 degrees. All in all taking up vital space needed for that big rat motor :bann: - can not wait to fire that up for the first time!
