Tilt column hub spacing?

1 Attachment(s)
Is there supposed to be a Spacer between the Canceling Cam an Steering Wheel Hub on my Tilt Column?
As I’ve said on previous threads, I bought the column used, so I don’t know if something is missing or not.
The space in between the Cancelling cam and hub required me to fab a bushing so that the horn contact ring would keep in contact with the Spring loaded button.
Is there a plastic spacer plate/dust shield that is missing?
Like I said, I don’t know, so any insights will help.
Thanks in advance.

So is there any insight into whether a spacer is supposed to be here?

It has been a while since I looked inside of one, but I do not remember one.

It looks like you are using an aftermarket wheel. If so, there should have been one with the wheel kit if it needed one. Stock setup does not have a spacer.

Re: Tilt column hub spacing?

Thank you to both.
Yes Doc, I am using a Grant Wheel.
And thanks on the insight.
I’ve got a piece of semi-ridged plastic that I can make the spacer I need.
Originally I was thinking that the splines on the steering shaft were damaged but with a detailed inspection, they were just dirty and a little surface rust.
I cleaned them up, and carefully ran a micro-file through each groove, and now it feels a lot better.

Yeah, I’m gonna put it back together in the morning,
I found one cancelling spring in my junk box, and I’m gonna make another one to work until I get the ones I’m about to order.
I’ll update tomorrow afternoon :metal:

If you order them online, you'll pay more for shipping than the cost of the springs.. Why not go to your local auto parts supply and get them.. For instance, O'Reillys has them hanging on their Dorman HELP display for $4.00..

I was wondering about that. Thanks.
I ended up finding one in my pats box, and used it to fab another one.
It seems to work, but I will be going to town later today to see about them.:metal:

You can successfully make the springs if you use "Music" or "Piano" wire of the same diameter. It's available at any hobby shop or shop that sells model airplane supplies. It may also be available ACE or similar hardware stores.
