Spaced Out Carb
My mildly built 283 has always had a momentary slight throttle lag right off of idle. (Just enough to be noticed but minor enough to be ignored). I have an Edelbrock Performer EPS with matching 500c cfm carb. The other day I found a 1inch 4 hole carb spacer in my junk. It has an aluminum border with a purple plastic inset for the holes. I thought "what the heck" and put it on. It's funny what a difference it made. The momentary off idle lag went away. The around town acceleration is noticeably smoother and hard acceleration is still the same as it ever was. I don't know any other gearheads (personally)and I just had to tell someone....so thanks for reading.

I didn't take one of it, and now that it's installed it's a bit late. After I took a test drive, I Googled, carb spacers just to see if I could get an I.d. on the one I installed, but nope. Even, google images produced no match. All I can tell you is only the border, where the studs go thru it, is aluminum. The whole rest was a purple plastic. Probably so as to conduct less heat (and reduce production costs). It does seem as though it may have cured the typical Eddy carb "hotstart fuel boil" but as our weather has already cooled a bit, I didn't want to make that claim"on the record" just yet.

Interesting. Was that the only thing that was changed? It almost reminds me of a time I, just for the heck of it, advanced my timing.

back when I had a carb engine the guys at the local speed shop talked me into a carb spacer...I couldn't tell any difference. .on the street or at the track. ..

That kind of makes sense. If the fuel couldn't make the turn and winds splatting on the wall you would have a maldistribution and some cylinders would be too rich and others too lean. The spacer gives you a smoother path. That might help fuel economy, too.

Good read on the info ,Dave! From playing, I have found pretty much the same....the 4 hole spacers, tend to give low/mid tork, on a mild engine. It is not carved in "stone", & as mentioned in the thread.... some tuning may be involved, to pull the max out? On a street car/truck, that last bit of power, you will not feel.....but how it responds is the right way on the street;) As mentioned in the thread...track & street are different!
