TH350 Question if anyone knows
 

Last week my TH350 3-sp transmission gave indication that the forward gears gave out, but I still have reverse, I am wondering if its just the torque converter that has problems. I am going to be taking out my tranny this week to repair it, even if it means to get one from the junkyard and a rebuild kit from LMC in order to tear it down and rebuild it to like new. Any ideas would be great before I call the transmission shop, and have them rebuilt the parts I send them.

a torque convertor would not cause a no forward problem, it is probably the forward clutch pack, or low/reverse clutches, you can get rebuild kits at napa, advance auto, the problem is inside the trans,

have you ever rebuilt a trans???

Not in a truck, but i have rebuilt a few when I was doing automotive at Warren Tech school .

ok, same thing as any other 350, just take it slow, and lay it out in order it came out in, do one clutch pack at a time,
and don't trust your eyes, if your eyes pick up on something, feel it with your hands,

Unless you just want to do it yourself its just about as cheap to drop it at a shop and let them build it. its about 400$ around here for one and usually they have a couple sitting on the shelf and will just swap out with you.

400bucks!? Here n cali all quotes are 1000 and up. Its a mess to do urself theres alot of utube vids that explain it but id buy a book and try it urself, or take ur chances on a junk yard trans for 200???

Oh, yea, even though I have great eyesight, I still feel the work that I am working with in case my eyes missed a wear pattern or something, I can feel the imperfections of the metal or other material.

OH YES, that was stepone, =get an overhaul manual so that way I hade a more clear idea what I was doing, and that would give me a good reference point as to what is the correct thickness of things and what not.

I took my transmission pan off today, and cleaned it off so I could see what all was in it.
I found what appears to me to be either spacers or some kind of composite material.
the stuff at the top of the picture was a transmission gasket sealant to try to stop the leaking...
didn't work.

I build stock rebuilds for 400-500 here, then if you want more, it'll cost more, alot depends on what your motor has in it, stock motor, a stock build would work,

that stuff in the pan, looks bad, ate up a thrush washer by the looks of it, or burned up some clutches, you would want a master rebuild kit, with bushings and thrush washers, the thrush washers are selective, meaning that they have different thicknesses for end play, a local book store should have, or have access to ordering a good book to do the rebuild

I dont doubt it, when i first seen it, it reminded me of broken shale rock.
although a master rebuild kit don't sound to bad.

If it's worth doing, do it right the first time.

I would also recommend a book from Automatic Transmission Service Group:http://atsg.biz/ They make great step by step manuals.
Also, having built my fair share of trannys when working at the dealer level, I NEVER put RTV / Silicone on the trans pan as seen in the picture you posted....

Yea, I asked the auto parts place about stopping leaks around the transmission pan, and they referred me to this type of squeeze in sealant that is like a silicon type of gasket, and it didn't work.
When I remove my tranny this week I will be looking for case cracks or anything that may have allowed the fluid to leak out.
I looked at the detent cable entry, and the dipstick tube inlet, and around the pan where I seen drops of fluid, although I hadn't located it.
Going to do it right this time.

I thank everyone for their feedback on this posting..
the new posting will start out with the start of the rebuild process.
As I go along on my trip around the transmission, I'll post pics and comments
as I get things taken apart and rebuilt.

I have checked out the great links and information that everyone sent, and I thank you, it helped me in making a good decision on a small budget and get things back in working order.
