2 Speed Axle Knob

I am in search of a 2 Speed Axle Shift Controller for my 1954 6100. My truck had it, but someone took it out and replaced it with a non electric one attached to the gear shift.

I tried posting this in the parts subforum but it keeps saying I don't have privileges so here I am. Move it to the right spot.

I think you don't have priveleges because you need to be a paid member to post a "wanted" thread.

Is your switch anything like this one? This is the switch I remember from grandfather's trucks when I was young:

Thanks for that information. I missed that.

The knob looks like the attached. It's a round knob that was located at the bottom edge of the dash under the key.

i had a 2 speed axle in my 56 chevy school bus/camper, it was all vacuum operated
shift knob on the gear shift was cabled under the floor where the vacuum valve was located
2 loooong vacuum lines back to the vacuum actuator on the rearend for shifting
chances are if you have electric shift, it was added after 1960

i can't imagine having a hi/low knob on the dash was inducive to split shifting on hills

there is a big trucks sub-forum in this forum, you might want to ask there
most of us here have 3100 to 3800 (unless buggy has some insight) :D

That would be what this one should have but it was changed out for some reason before I bought it. It is still vacuum and not electric. I'll try to post over there.

One of the 51 Cabs I have came off a truck with a 2 speed but I'd have to look to see if that stuff is still in the cab. I don't know what they did with year to year changes with that stuff.

I went out and checked and this is what I have. both the knob and the valve on the outside. To me it isn't worth anything but I can't afford to just mail stuff to folks with the hope they will send me the postage anymore as I've been burned for my generosity too many times now. I'll have to see what size of box it will fit in if you think you can use it.

You let me know what it will take to get it to me. I'll send the money and then you can send me the part.

I'll pull all of it out tomorrow and see what size priority mail box it fits in.

What kind of price are you wanting for it?

Re: 2 Speed Axle Knob

Let me see how many knuckles I bang up taking it off.

Actually what it costs to ship it including the roll of tape to tape the box is all I want.

I'm not going to ask any real money for it as I don't know if the valve or other parts will work and thy may just be parts for yours. For the cost of shipping you get the knob and the rest of the pieces that go with it.

This cab is off one of two 1-1/2 tons I bought up in the wheat fields a few years ago. This will give me an excuse to load that cab on the trailer with another one tomorrow anyhow.

LOL... some day we might be listing our trucks for sale with the DNA history of the people that worked on them.

Re: 2 Speed Axle Knob

Well the good news is that I have it part way out and so far have not lost any blood. Family commitments slowed the things down over the weekend and those friendly clutch head screws are giving me a run for my money right now.

Re: 2 Speed Axle Knob

The dread curse of the clutch head screws. I was hoping that there was a nut plate on the back of the two screws that held the knob's bracket to the dash but no such luck.

There is a box on the back of the speedometer head that is shifted by a wire rod from the knob. that changes the speedometer reading to match the rear axle gear. I am not sure if this one is any good but will pull it out.

Unless the weather gets nasty tonight I should have it out tomorrow. I'm no sure the clutch head screws will survive though.

We have parts. I finally got all the pieces out with only a few cut disk marks where the clutch head screws were.

Evidently there was a pretty good fire under the dash at one time as the box that changes speedometer readings to match the rear gear ratio was melted to the point the gears were showing. Lots of fried wires in that area. That piece is junk and useless. I did save the little wire rod that goes from the shaft on the knob to the box as the box may be in your truck.

I'll get it boxed up in a few minutes and figure out what it costs to ship.

Got it boxed up, weighed and measured 4.82 lbs and 21x 3 x 7

Cost with tape and bubble wrap is 25.00

I'll send you a pm with my info for Paypal or you can send a postal money order.

weren't many stitches required, i see :D

Re: 2 Speed Axle Knob

No blood lost. Two clutch head screws sacrificed.

I made a run to town the other day and got three priority mail boxes and it wouldn't fit in the standard ones and the post office dude said that it would cost more to use the long skinny box than one of my own. Those Costco lED light boxes are pretty stout and I have a good supply of them right now.

For those who wonder why I pulled it and am sending it for just the cost of shipping and the tape it had no real cash value to me. I probably wouldn't have pulled it off the cab to try and sell when I finish getting what I want off it. I even found out that the key in the switch works the door lock that I showed a photo of a few months ago in the door lock how to get a key thread. That is one of the original to the truck keys from 1951 as it has the same number as the lock stamped in it.
