67-72 wiring harness???
 

Hey everyone
I'm getting ready to re-wire my 70 chevy. I was wondering if I could get some input here. I've been shopping and looking at different harnesses, but which one is gonna be the best bang for my buck so to speak? I've been looking at EZ Wire but I have my reservations cause of how much cheaper it is compared to other harnesses. I am on a budget, but this is a very important purchase. I don't want to buy a cheap one and end up having a ton of headaches down the road. I don't have much electrical expericence so I would like a harness that will be easy to install. So what do you guys recommend? Thanks in advance for any info and hint/tips you can give me.

Painless is running a promotion for 100.00 mail in rebate this month i believe. American auto wire, and Ron Francis both have kits for 67-72 direct replacement. you can contact MBGMIKE , or any other site vendor for a quote.

going from personal experience, i like the painless kit. it only took a few days to install but i know if i would have had more time in the day, it have have been done in 2 days.

Its a complete kit and each wire is marked every 12 inches or so with the section and item it is connecting to: taillight section, right turn signal. it has a brand new fuse block with the new style plastic fuses which is great. some of the wires already have the right style connector so all you have to do is plug it in and you are done. another cool feature is that is has the wires setup for add ons like electric windows and fuel pump.

It sounds like most of the guys on here went the painless route. And I'm thinking that might be the best route for me to take. I'd like to get more input on some of the other kits out there. Do any of the direct replacement harnesses have the extra circuits for power windows and such? Since this is my first wiring job I dont want to get a kit thats gonna get me in over my head.

I've seen several threads on here with the ezwire harness, here's one post you might check with rage777 and get his thoughts, if you get stuck on something there are plenty of guys here willing to help out.

Thats a pretty good price and you get $100. When you get the box, you will notice you get quite a bit, i think it weighed 20 pounds.

Cant go wrong with painless, IMHO.

That would really depend on ones skill level, I didn't think it was that bad. Reading the thread may make it seem that way but allot of that back and forth was really just getting on the same page (thats the toughest thing to overcome in ThreadShooting IMO). The schematic was simple but so is the system being installed. I don,t like how they distribute power from the alt to the starter, battery and cab but Painless does it the same way.

M&H sells replacement harnesses that are like the stock ones, but you have choices like getting a harness that's set up for HEI, and/or an internally regulated alternator. They are more expensive than Painless for example, but have all connectors already installed.

If you go the Painless route, you should look into what tools such as crimpers are needed. There are many different types of crimpers. Its not a good idea to use a pair of pliers or the wrong crimper.

I installed a painless kit on my 72 GMC and a EZ wiring harness on my 68. IMO the EZ harness is just as good as the painless (if not better) and it costs less.
