I was thinking, if you make a trip here, I'm going to have to make a trip here. There isn't a lot of scenery here compared to your neck of the woods.

Re: 72 k20 project

Oh trust me i know. i saw all there was to see from the business seat of a john deere. then i politely took my leave. i cannot say i've had one regret in moving out here. generally the wages are crap and the cost of living is ridiculous. outside of those hurdles you cant beat the place. and the scenery is superb.

this is the view sitting on my back porch

this is what i see if i step out of my garage and glance to the west

That's really nice. When I get a view like that, it's just low lying clouds.

Re: 72 k20 project

i picked up some ford front u-bolt plates that should work on my new axle even though they are off a later model d60. i also managed to get my frame side engine tabs cut for a first time test, but later that night my DD that i bought the day before blew a head gasket(although after starting to tear it down tonight i might be lucky enough to just be doing an intake gasket). add that to the fact that my backup vehicle (67 m715) is burping and farting because of some funk in the EST i have put the 72 on the back burner temporarily.

with luck maybe i can work on it sunday.

Re: 72 k20 project

i was making good progress with the f-250 head gasket job yesterday. i was about to re-install the second head and the gasket separated when i sat the gasket on the dowel... great. since no one in town has anything (one of the trade-offs of living in beautiful SW BFE) and the two i ordered last week were apparently the last two west of the Mississippi i am waiting till wednesday. that opened up my day today for some chevy action.

Re: 72 k20 project

Right on Ryan! Looking good. Do your self a favor now and cut the boxing plate and RH frame rail. Notch it, rebox it and I bet you can get the dodge a/c comp in there. I got it in on mine.

Re: 72 k20 project

thanks

i think i am actually going to use the f-800 stuff. the comp mount that sits above the water outlet and the sanden compressor that has the ports that exit sideways instead of out the back. if i try to fit the dodge comp in there i will be all the way out to the outer web of the frame rail and it still may not come off without lifing the engine. i looked at it but the engine is just to far back into the narrow area of the frame.

Re: 72 k20 project

Have you priced the F800 stuff lately?

ryanroo 05-07-2012 08:12 AM

Re: 72 k20 project

just a quick search showed the cast iron part for $160~ not a bad price for saving me tons of hours of reconstuction on the frame rail or making my own. as for the compressor, i havent looked but i imagine its not that cheap. probably on the 400 dollar range. not the best but still saving me alot of headache and hand wringing makes it a little better

Re: 72 k20 project

I finally got my DD truck back running. that was less of a problem than i made it out to be, but it is done.

i mocked out some of the rear boxing plates this afternoon. hopefullyy i can get them cut out sometime this week. i will also be removing the stock rear crossmember at some point so i can start fabbing the new one. that will lead to more boxing plate. i hope also to kick up a few leads on a np241 for the truck so i can get the tranny crossmember done.

Re: 72 k20 project

So not much has happened in the way of concrete progress. the draftsman decided to have a baby this week and hasnt been at the shop since tueday. that means no frame plates yet...

on a better note, i have my transfer case and a Dana 80 w/3:54s headed this way. i think that pretty much sums up the powertrain. all that is left is to rebuild the 47re and the front 60. ill post some pics when the goodies arrive later this weekend

Sounds good Ryan. You said 47re, I hope you mean 47rh.

Re: 72 k20 project

trust me, ive been keeping my eyes open for an rh. but i have the harness and 'puter for this set up and will run it if nothing else pops up. plus i can use a controller if i want and adjust my shift points... and i if i run the computer i dont have to worry about regulating my alt. or thinking about how long to cycle the grids. i just have to remember the radio shack resistor for those pesky battery temp sensors.

some goodies!

its a dld, i know i know. it should be fine for me. if it blows up i'll rustle up a dhd.

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...ruck/006-4.jpg

and the rear ballast

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...uck/003-10.jpg

i also did a little chopping and adding to the rear area. as soon as the draftsman shows back up i will hopefully have some boxing plates to finish up the rear.

its doing great. i used one of those fancy fail to open thermostats when i put it all back together and it was stuck open out of the box. it takes a while to warm up, but outside of still needing to replace it i haven't had a stitch of trouble with it. i think i have a line on a 60F for it so i can be rid of that stupid TTB as well. ill see how that plays out in a week or two

i made some forward progress. i got a start on my transmission/transfer cross member

i actually had the formed channel lying around from another project. i just had to cut it to length. i made the 45ed part this afternoon.

http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l8...uck/002-16.jpg

all smoothed up. hopefully i can get the other parts of it done sometime soon
