My Weekend Disaster

Tire blew out on the freeway like a cap tire.
Could’ve been worse could’ve been killed or could have been my orange one anyways
The axle got pushed back and sheared off the bolt on the leaf spring.

I feel your pain. Tryin to repair my 72 blazer now.
It's scary what crap tires are nowadays. I had one brand new one last week with a huge bubble.
How old were the tires?

That could have turned out so much worse; happy to hear that you are okay!

Re: My Weekend Disaster

Just curious as to how old the tires were. What's the date code on them? located beside the DOT #
That's one of the reasons I added a sway bar on my Blazer. Failure of a spring bolt would not cause the front axle to move back with a sway bar.

Re: My Weekend Disaster

Thanks guys ....Crazy thing is that I was in the far right lane doing 60mph
and it shoved me all the way across the freeway into that wire divider which was only 12 to 13 more feet of it and I would’ve missed it and been in the emergency turn around lane coming to a halt . That sucks just wasn’t in the cards for me I guess. I kept looking at the end of the dividing wire and was saying come on ol blue come on ol blue I tried pulling away from the dividing wire but just couldn’t make it. I’m going to have to check the date on those tires I didn’t know you could do so. But still you wouldn’t think they would blow off like a cap.

Re: My Weekend Disaster

A front blow out is my worst nightmare, especially with tall tires. I hope that the reason is older tires, because if that tire is within 5 years, that should be a wake-up call for all of us. Good thing it was only sheet metal that was damaged, and that these trucks are very cheap to repair.

BTW, what brand are those tires anyway ? Never seen them before. Almost look like retreads.

Re: My Weekend Disaster

Not to drag this thread out but I’ve had the worst luck with tires here lately I only told you guys half the story. About a month ago I was driving this 1986 CUCV pickup I bought from this Government auction . 29,000 miles on it and I’m guessing the original tires . I knew these tires were risky they were dry rotted on the side walls . I’ve been driving it here and there close to home nothing serious . Then I made a mistake to agree to help a friend move some appliances to his new place big mistake ...lol this video I made speaks for itself I flew off at seven or 8 foot drop off onto a cornfield with a washer, dryer, stove & Refrigerator that was up right against the back of the cab . How I didn’t roll this truck with all this crap in the back I’ll never have the answer to .

Bought new tire after this happens to me.

Sounds like you're having bad luck with tires. Can I suggest an alternative? LOL

Re: My Weekend Disaster

Luckily you are OK. Like you said, things could have been much worse. And like the other poster said, even as much as it hurts, metal can be replaced.

It is funny how things change. I can remember being young and wild, and if a tire would hold air it was good to go.

As an older guy I find myself inspecting my tires like 'old people'. LOL

Good luck with the repair and count your blessings.

S

I'd still like to know how old the tires were.

Re: My Weekend Disaster

Well, the OP has not answered my question, so I'll just assume these were dry rotted and old.

Tire manufacturers suggest replacement at 5 years.
