Pics as promised...Mine didnt sit well on the dash. Seemed kinda warped where it meets the windshield. I fixed that w/ industrial strength double sided tape and left 25# dumbbells on the dash overnight to hold it down.:metal:

Looks like it hangs over the dash a little bit, is that just in the center or does it do it towards the corners also? I like it but I wonder if I could have one made locally for around the same money... |
Re: Dash pad w/gauge pods
does it block the center ac vent?
|
Re: Dash pad w/gauge pods
Firstgen, the pad extends out all the way across. from an inch or so at the corners to where you see it at the center.
Matt, it does not cover the center a/c vent... |
Re: Dash pad w/gauge pods
What kind of guages are those??? They did not come with the pad correct?
|
Re: Dash pad w/gauge pods
Those gauges are "Equus". They have them at Advanced auto. I was suspect about their quality because of there price ($30) but they work well.

Hmm... impressive www.iequus.com/companybackground

Re: Dash pad w/gauge pods
Do you still have any available for sale
|
Re: Dash pad w/gauge pods
You know, a pillar pods are budget friendly, easily modified with little skill involved and place the Gauges more within your immediate sight.

Re: Dash pad w/gauge pods
I have a gauge pod. It's called an instrument cluster. I think their has been a general move toward original design since this thread has started. Might be why these dash pad pods aren't offered any more. I am building my '67 as a period correct hot truck. Not so concerned with being all original, such as was the case in 67-72. Although I have a premium grade tach dash to use, I am thinking to create my own cluster using more accurate performance gauges. In 67-72 when 30s-50s cars and trucks were being hot rodded, you'd see people building their own clusters, the way drag racers did. Knee knocker tach, larger speedometer dead center, oil pressure/oil temp one one side and amperes/water temp on the other. I don't recall seeing guys stumbling over themselves to run tach dashes back then in anything. That was for our dad's car

Re: Dash pad w/gauge pods
There are modern options to dash gauge cluster. This being one of them, not cheap

Yeah, lots of options for gauge styles. I want a tach in a cup, not in the dash. That's how hot rodders did it, in newer vehicles where just the tach was added. Newer meaning 50s/60s, like '55 Chevys and Chevelles. The 30s/40s cars you might have seen custom clusters, but 50s/60s were too new to be tearing in that deep, it seemed. My concept is retro, not truly era correct I guess. It's just an idea I'm milling around with. I'm considering for era correct to use a no gauge cluster, knee knocker tach on column, and 3-gauge under dash cluster below the ash tray.
I got this tach last weekend. I never saw a cup with ribs. That will go with the '67 wind vent latches and the chrome '66 mirror I'm using |
Re: Dash pad w/gauge pods
Looking at those pods, I'm not seeing any gauges that give the driver any more info than what's already there. OK, "Volts" instead of "D/C"- the dis/charge gauge. My FiL added a tach. It sits up on the far left of the dash pad. He put a (Pontiac) vacuum gauge in where the tach would go...and a trans temp gauge in front of the blank spot where a vacuum gauge from the factory would go. I'd like to put the tach where it belongs, and the trans temp gauge in the blank spot. But then, there would be no vacuum gauge (which is not really all that valuable, imo). This will all probably never happen, given my arthritis and the contortions I'd have to make to get it done. I'm not excited enough about it to pay a couple of kilobucks to have someone else do it, either.

Re: Dash pad w/gauge pods
That's pretty much how my '72 K2500 was when I bought it, gaugewise. Only, it had a Suntune tach in the tach hole, transmission temp gauge in the empty hole, and a tuning type vacuum gauge with a homemade bracket mounted to the dash. You can see where the previous owner moved that twice. When I changed my interior over to saddle I put a tach dash in that I had. I really like the vacuum gauge, very beneficial. It saves fuel, tells you to let up on the peddle to go the same speed. It showed color-coded ranges. I have one of those Pontiac console vacuum gauges in the bullet pod. Very cool. But it would be way down there on the hump. Kind of far to be practical. About as bad as texting while driving just to read it. I don't want a console in my truck

Re: Dash pad w/gauge pods
The only time I care about vacuum is when I'm pulling my travel trailer uphill. I don't know why; it's always at 0", and the Q-Jet secondary barrel roar is louder than the exhaust! In a vehicle that isn't towing, a case can be made for a vacuum gauge, educating a person on light-footing it for better mileage.

Re: Dash pad w/gauge pods
Just a lift of the foot can maintain the same speed while going from "power" to "economy" a couple ranges better. I think "Cruising" is between that. My truck hauled a 5th wheel travel trailer

Not a good pic, but this is what I did

My 72 came with the "gauge option" but no tach. I just zip tied, instead of using the old school radiator clamp, a tach I had on column.
