OEM gauges with 12v system
 

I read on the HAMB that you can use voltage reducer 12v to 6v for each electrical connection and use the OEM gauges. I really like the OEM gauges and dont want to use a modern gauge. My truck is using a 4.3 s10 motor and will be upgraded to 12v. I saw that speedwaymotors has volt reducers for gauges. They are 19.99 each. Thoughts, Experience. Also while we are on the topic of gauges, how hard is it to disassemble the gauge. My rings are kinda crappy and want to have them cleaned up.

You would be better off with replacing your gages with reproduction gages. temp. sending unit will have a longer capilary tube for better reach (does not run off of battery power). 6 or 12 volts don't matter for the Oil pressure gage either so you could use the original. Fuel gage can be bought as 12 volt, but looks the same as original. You can find the repo gages at any of the aftermarket sources e.g. Brothers, Jim Carters, Classic performance..

For the amp gage, I reworked my original gage face with a volt meter. The only diff. is the needle, which is not very noticable. This is much safer that using a amp meter because with the amp meter, you need to run a 8# or 10# wire to the gage from the alt.. See link below for some pics of the volt meter mod.

you can also send them to a speedo shop. i had all my original gauges rebuilt for around 900 bucks @ north hollywood speedometer. there a great shop and can do any custom work you might need. they are use to working thru the mail as well...

GT that is steep. 900. WHile I am sure they look amazing, that is a bit much for me to spend. Trying to do it on a budget.

understood... my gauges were trashed so if your just adding a specific function like a 50 psi oil gauge they can do just that. they rebuilt all 5 of my gauges for that price including sensors for the engine and matching my gas tank sensor. i will probably go back to them for an amp gauge swap to volts. that way I'm not routing all my electrical thru the 30 amp original gauge. it's worth a phone call to see if they can just fix what you need...
