Lower Tailgate Trim, CST - Factory Correct?

4 Attachment(s)
Did all 71 and 72 CST's get the lower tailgate trim from the factory? The narrow one along the bottom of the tailgate. I had assumed for sure Cheyennes and Cheyenne Supers with the wide "CHEVROLET" tailgate band definitely go it but after taking notice, I have seen plenty without it. Every blazer CST I've noticed has it but not all the trucks. If missing, is this just something that was maybe omitted when repaired or restored?

Going by what I currently have, used to own, or have parted out (several cheyenne super & sierra grandes) in the past, I would say the CST blazers were the only ones that left the factory with both the wide lower band/applique and the lower thin molding strip at bottom edge of the tailgate. Blazers got it, trucks with wide band did not.

Lower tailgate trim on Chevy Fleetsides came on 69/70 Customs and 71/72 Custom Deluxes which had no tailgate band.

The first truck is yellow and white two tone, wouldn't that be reason for those trim pieces?

Re: Lower Tailgate Trim, CST - Factory Correct?

Two tone has nothing to do with the chrome on lower gate of the trucks. The trucks did not get both the wide band and both upper and lower at least on cheyennes and supers. However I bought the bed and gate off of a 72 custom deluxe several years ago that had black side moldings(lower) upper bed trim, upper and lower thin molding on the gate and a wide band in woodgrain as well. I figured it was added but the truck was very original one owner , even had the parts card under the carpet from the supplier in knoxville.

My '71 CST blazer has no lower trim.
Just the upper and the wide band.

I never knew K/5s had both. Are we sure that's a fact? Why would GM do those any different than trucks? It makes no sense.

The only time i have seen all 3 pieces were on cst blazers.
My wifes truck is a 70 c-10 with upper and lower chrome on the sides and gate. (no wide band) Pretty sure it is correct.

Every Original CST Blazer (71 and 72 anyway) I have seen had all 3 pieces, pickups only 2, I have no idea why GM would do that.

It's funny...I had a '70 CST Blazer for 25 years and never took notice of the difference.

One thing absolutely for sure with GM...Nothing is for sure. They never figured or cared that 40-60 years later that their vehicles would still be in service and that a bunch of us would be trying to figure out what and how they assembled them. To keep the assembly line moving if they ran out of something, a supplier went out of business, or mid year changes were made the main objective was to keep the units rolling. In 45 years of doing this I have seen some weird stuff which has lead to major discussions on originality. Example: I had a low mile one owner never touched 67 427 400 hp factory air corvette convertible that came from the factory with the back window sewn in backwards and every NCRS or Bloomington show I ever went to counted off points for that. You never know for sure...

Funny, my paint and body guy returned a "single long trim piece that looks like the three pieces around the tailgate handle" today when I checked on the progress he was making. I found this thread and then had to find older pictures of my Blazer to see if it had the lower piece before I dropped it off. No lower trim and although ther had been some paint work done, I am almost positive the tailgate still had the original finish.

Re: Lower Tailgate Trim, CST - Factory Correct?

That lower tailgate trim required nine good sized holes across the tailgate. So,if it's the original tailgate and all CST K/5s had the lower trim there should be nine filled holes

Now that we have established which truck came with trim (my plain jane no option truck has tailgate trim) The question at hand is, how do you remove that trim?

Guys... There is another use for that lower trim....

Although the fit isn't perfect, and you have to dremel the shape of the tailgate into it..

And I'm still slowly bringing it down to be flush...
