1 Attachment(s)
getting into 4x4 no more hot rod time for a change BUT I still love my engines so
with a big 4x4 37 inch tires big lift 400 trans and stock 350 crate engine
I know if I put a big radical cam will sound good but i know that i want tourqe more than i will want high h/p I want to keep stock stall and not shift it at 6000 SO what is best camshaft for a truck like mine
I know i will need to get the tires spinning when in mud so let me know what you big guys out there are running for camshaft and intake man... and how they do for you thanks guys

I have a couple buddies that I put the Comp XE 268 in and they love it. One is a Blazer on 38's and will boil the tires off and is running a stock converter and straight propane. The other is a buggy on rockwells, 44's, propane with the same cam and it crawls and hauls awesome. We play in the rocks more than mud, but they do great in both.

Running the XE262 in my k20 burb. Running 36"x12.5" tires and 3.73 gears. No complaints on low end power. It's no BB, but I can clean out the lugs without effort in the mud, in high range. And snap axle shafts on solid ground, in low range. Great mid-range power for toodling around town. I don't have enough heads, yet, to get good top end power from it. It falls on it's face about 4,700rpm. But in a 4wd, I don't think I'd use it often enough anyway. I had to make myself run the rpm up that high the one time I did. The rest of the time it's doing great work well under 4k rpm.

Mine is about 9.5:1 CR, w/rpm intake, holley 670 carb on a 1" 4hole spacer, 882 heads w/good springs, and hei dist. Nothing special. Estimates come in around 330hp, w/400ft lbs around 3,500rpm. Running that thru a th400 and low stall HD converter. The only change I can see wanting, other than maybe some aluminum heads, is to go with a TBI set-up. Might do that to get some better mpg's at some point. But I have lots of other more productive work to do to the beast before I start spending any more money under the hood.

A lot of it depends on the compression ratio of your crate engine. If you have a 9-9.5:1 motor you could go up to about 224 duration @ .050. If you are only at 8-8.5:1, I would not go over 214 @ .050. Too big and you'll loose too much low end torque.

Torque is made by cylinder pressure. At low RPM the biggest things that help with cylinder pressure are compression and cubes. If you know what crate engine you have, you should be able to find out what the compression is.

I have built about 30 different small block combos, and the ones that ran the best always had the compression matched well to the cam. Another thing I found was that the less expensive brand cams (summit, wolverine, PAW) work just as well as the name brands as long as the specs are similar.

Good Luck

If you have 9:1 you can run a 224 @ .050 cam with a stock converter. If your at 8:1 it will be a pig. I had real good luck with a 204 I 214 E @ .050 and .420 .443 lift on a 112, I also had good luck with the 214 I 224 E @.050 .443 .465 on a 112. I ran both of these in 9:1 motors. Couldn't tell a whole lot of difference. They would both pull well to about 5000 rpm. Almost everybody makes these cams and they are inexpensive. If your compression is unknown, get the smaller of the two.

Keep in mind though, a cam swap alone won't make a ton of difference. Especially if your crate engine was one of the higher hp ones.
