New Blazer

Hello all, I just bought a '79 K5. Not really any rust, and it has a soft top as well as a hardtop.

That's a good looking truck - nice score.

Re: New Blazer

Thanks. I look forward to driving it. I paid 3000 for it. Minimal rust, and only surface rust at that, and it runs great. New front brakes, new drive shaft, part time conversion, both tops in awesome shape, new body bushings. I may need to put new shocks on though.

Re: New Blazer

You stole it at that price. That soft top alone is $800 and is the nicest one available.

Add some interior shots when you get a chance - nice score.

Nothinghead 04-09-2012 07:26 AM

Re: New Blazer

Forgot about those. The interior is mostly original, but the carpet is new, done by the last owner, though there are a couple things that need some work, like the buckets, and the gauge lights.

There is a switch next to the manual choke that I can't seem to figure out where it goes, and a place for a plug on the transfer case selector that doesn't have something plugged into it. The selector also does not have a very positive index so I will need to work on that some.

Re: New Blazer

So, this is my new beast. I have never had a V8 or a 4x4, so I am excited about all of that.

I plan to completely remove the AC components. It came with the parts you don't see in a box in the trunk, and those along with what is still in the truck will be sold off I think. I also plan to learn to weld, and will be doing all of the mechanical work myself or with the help of my uncle and cousin.

Re: New Blazer

Welcome to the board from Mt.Airy,MD. That's a real fine '79. Did you get both sets of wheels? That back seat looks like it was recovered with newer style fabric or is it a newer seat? I have seats in what looks like the same fabric in excellent condition from an '89 Blazer if you're interested.

Re: New Blazer

AC Components are back in. Need to get the plumbing straightened out, and some wiring for the AC now, then I can charge the system.

Can you run a tranny cooler, as well as an AC condenser? Do I really need a tranny cooler? I don't plan to tow, and that seems to be the only operation that requires one.

Re: New Blazer

Well, $100 to LMC and my tailgate window should be working again.

I was able to save all but the sash itself, so I can bolt my tracks on and insert the window filler and the window and be good to go.

Real nice Blazer. I like the factory radio too. Leave it in! It's extremely rare to see a K5 with the factory radio.

Re: New Blazer

Thanks. I like the radio. It works, and that's all I really need from it.

Re: New Blazer

I'll probably have those seats for a while yet. They are stores in a dry place. I have the rear one, too, and want them all gone together. Send me a PM if you get to a point you can buy them. I can't think of too much I need help with...unless I get funds to rent a man-lift to trim and/or cut down a few trees.
How are those channels working out? They made a world of difference in the '90 Blazer I had.
I didn't notice your radio. Is that the am/fm/cassette stereo? My friend I was at Carlisle with last week pulled one out to sell and snatched it up. He has a harness and speakers in a cab he just sold,so I'm grabbing that, too. The Jimmy came with a mono am/fm which isn't great new and even worse now...crackle pop is not my preferred genre

Nothinghead 04-29-2012 08:25 PM

Re: New Blazer

it is am/fm with stereo.

I can cut down trees if you need that help, believe me. if there is no danger of them falling on anything, I do that for fun.

What do you mean by channels?

special-K 04-30-2012 08:01 AM

Re: New Blazer

I thought it was the glass channels for the rear window you replaced. That's what I call them, but maybe they're called guides,tracks,sashes,or... Those thingies on the side with fabric that rots out so your window doesn't like to go all the way up. That's what I was thinking you replaced.
IF I ever get to the tree work,it will be done safely. That's why I want to use a 60' man-lift. I figure on trimming my way down from the end a little at a time. If need be,I will tie the section off to another limb so I can ease it done on the rope. I do anything needed alone with some forethought. But,I realize this would be a mountain of work with all that'll be on the ground to clear up and when the rope is used I'd have to go down and untie it. This is something I'd "like" to do,but realistically may never get done. It's on my list, but farther down. And,the main thing is the cost of rental equipment.

We should definitely get together with both K/5s,maybe a at a cruise night or show. My '85 Jimmy has a soft top, lift, and black wheels. They'd make a nice pair in complimentary colors.

Nothinghead 04-30-2012 08:26 AM

Re: New Blazer

I gotcha. The channel made a huge difference. Unfortunately I don't have pictures of what was in there before. It looked like someone had glued the window to the old track and then the track rotted away around the glue. The glue was hard as hell, but I managed to get it all off pretty well.

LMC sold me the sash for what I feel is a crazy amount of money, but was one of two places that had one, so I didn't have much choice. They also had the rubber strip that I folded around the bottom of the window to hold it in. It's not the greatest hold, but it certainly works. I may find a way to attach it more permanently.

I would love to get together for a cruise or something. Right now I am working on a tune up and all to get it running more reliably. Should be all good this weekend.
