Speedy sleave for front output shaft on NP205

My front output shaft for my NP205 is leaking. My question is can I put the speedy sleave on the shaft with out having to press it on, thus not taking the t-case out from under the truck and not having to unbolt it from the sm465? The seal was new and started leaking before I ever got on the road with my truck. If anybody has any photo's of what this speedy sleave looks like and how to install, it would be appreciated. The NP205/SM465 combo come from a 1979 K10. I am guessing the 10 spline shaft....(been a while since I installed !) Thanks

You need to seperate the two. make sure the shaft is clean and the sleave should be a tight fit on the shaft. When used right, they do work well..Are you sure that the seal was installed corectly and not damaged???

Re: Speedy sleave for front output shaft on NP205

Another option is to install another factory seal slightly forward or back from where the damage on the shaft is. Usually there is enough fudge factor to get away with this. If you go to a speedi sleave make sure the shaft is immaculatley clean. Any gunk, burs, or out of roundness and the sleave will hang on install. Emory cloth is your friend. Also don't forget to install a little loctite between the sleave and shaft. It sucks when they leak between the two. Seen it happen!

When I say front output shaft...I am referring to the shaft that the front drive shaft connects too. Is this where most would put this speedy sleave at?
That being the case, I should not have to take the T-case off the tranny. This shaft was the only worn one when I looked over the case before I installed. These shafts seem to small in diameter to begin with considering the brute strength of the rest of the parts....am I way off base? Please enlighten me! thanks

On the yoke you can speedy sleeve but your going to have to run a custom seal then to a bigger size now that you've added material to the yoke

Re: Speedy sleave for front output shaft on NP205

My bad you don,t have to seperate the two like I said. You should use some green or light duty loctite on the inside of the sleeve. when you buy your kit, there should be a new lip seal that comes with it. Like the other post said, you may be able to sneak the seal back or forward in the housing to get around the worn spot on your shaft. depending on how deep the bore is on the front cover and how thick the seal is. If you do go with the sleeve fix make sure you do not cut your new seal lip during installation. Use some oil or grease on your new seal. don,t put it on dry :chevy:

As above no need to drop the case and the sleeve comes with the new seal.

Yes the yoke and retainer comes off if you have deep grove in the front output and if a std seal can't be moved back in the retainer than yes a sleeve and seal kit will be needed.

Re: Speedy sleave for front output shaft on NP205

The 205's weak link is the bearing covers and not the internals. Usually they hold up pretty good to gas motors but the diesel guys hate the 205 case. The aluminum bearing covers flex enough to grenade the case. The Cummins guys are easily putting 1000 ftlbs to the ground so the weak links are always found. Same way the NV4500 is considered rock solid by the gas crowd. It likes to drop 5th gear behind a diesel and there are numerous aftermarket repairs/upgrades because of this. A little off topic but good info.

Or buy a new or used good yoke? Take the old one off put the new one on easy p-z.

I should have replaced the damn thing when I had it out but thought I would get away with it....thats what I get for "thinking"....anyway, where can I get the "kit" (seal and sleave)? Would I ask for this specifically for a 1979 GM NP205 front output shaft/yoke? I know these questions sound stupid, but when it comes to getting parts these days...its anybodies quess who is behind the counter and probably knows less than me... thanks guys for all your input, this is a great forum! (thanks to guys like you)

Re: Speedy sleave for front output shaft on NP205

so the yoke is the cause for the leak? are you sure its dripping from the seal and not the nut? did you seal the splines?

is there a grove worn where the seal rides? knock the seal back a bit so it rides in a different spot on the yoke. get a new yoke, often times they can be had for free.

Re: Speedy sleave for front output shaft on NP205

The yoke/shaft is worn where the seal rides and I think the fluid is coming through the worn area and the seal. It was okay for a long time until I started moving the truck into and out of my garage as I've worked on it. I had the front driveshaft turning during this process and one day it just started leaking. When I go in to fix, I want to be prepared and saw on this forum that a speedy sleave might be an easy fix.

A used yoke that doesn't have a seal wear ring would be easier.

How about just put a new seal in? A small groove won't hurt anything.

Re: Speedy sleave for front output shaft on NP205

So.....I can change that shaft with the transfer case still mounted under the truck and connected to the 465? All I have to do is take off the nut and then the bearing cover and the shaft will come out? Its been along time since I put it together and I was thinking their was more to it....the original seal was new...I got the seal kit from the 205 Transfer Case guy....I cant remember his name.....but I am betting he has a shaft for this application.

Re: Speedy sleave for front output shaft on NP205

To change the shaft you have to pull it from the rear (the rear being towards the rear of the truck, if the transfer case were still in the vehicle) [see attached image]. Now this is merely just my opinion but if you are thinking about actually pulling the entire shaft I would recommend removing the t-case. I just dissected my case about a month ago and I will note that it was easier to work on on-top of a bench rather than under the truck. To save yourself some trouble you might consider just pulling the yoke and pulling the 4 bolts that hold the seal/bearing in place and try the easiest step first - replacing the seal. You should be able to do that underneath the truck. As for where to purchase seals or anything of the like I would recommend [http://www.applied.com/]. I have always had great experience with these guys.

Re: Speedy sleave for front output shaft on NP205

The front output shaft does not have any seal surface other than on the front yoke threads. Use rtv on the splines to seal the nut. Pulling the shaft is completely unnecessary.

x2! might just be the nut. Sealed my splines ten years ago. Not a drop since.:ito:

Re: Speedy sleave for front output shaft on NP205

I finally got around to getting at the leaking front output shaft on my NP205 transfer case.....boy when you havent worked on something for 5 years or so, you forget a few things......I now realize that the "Yoke" and the "shaft" are two distinct things! Boy what a breakthrough for me....I had forgotten completely that the seal is around the Yoke that is going over the shaft splines. The nut is then screwed on to the shaft to hold the yoke into place. I see the new NP205 how to rebuild thread is on the main board and went and looked at that. I see the RTV that jbclassix put on the shaft splines, and I am wondering if not having that could have been the problem all along...or maybe not having the nut at proper tightness, or maybe I need a new nut? OK, does anybody have a part number for the 32 spline yoke speedy sleeve? How about the custom seal for the larger opening? would they be the same as the 10 spline that jbclassix shows in his thread? Or should I just get a new Yoke and call it good? I will add a picture of the yoke as soon as I can. All help would be appreciated. The guys that have contributed all ready in this thread have really helped.....I just didn't realize it !

Well, welcome back to your project. A guy needs to walk away from it sometimes and wait for the second wind.
