Small block mounts 4x4

Hey all!

Does anyone know if the stock engine crossmember and the motor mounts will work with a big block? I am getting conflicting info, some have said that you can use the original small block motor mounts and crossmember to mount a 396, others have said you need to use a 73-87 crossmember with small block mounts to put a big block in a 4x4. I am building a 72 GMC 4x4 and the previous owner installed a 455 Olds motor in it and cut out and threw away the original. I have access to get an original crossmember with the small block mounts but don't want to get something I cant use. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Brian

The stock 4x4 crossmember and mounts for a small block will work with a big block. I did this to the truck in my avatar back in 1987. It is on a 2wd that you need the big block mounts because of exhaust manifold clearance. My truck now has a small block in it, but when it did have the big block, I had exhaust manifolds that cleared everything. I do not remember what the manifolds where off of, but I don't think it was a truck, they were probably from full size car.
What kind of tranny do you have?

I am also in the same boat. Trying to install a 402 BBC in my 1969 4x4 frame that had a straight 6. I have a 402 out of a 72 2x4, so I have those mounts. Wondering what will fit into the 69 frame. I would like to use the largest mounts possible.
