Is there a special rivet for the VIN tags? I drilled and pulled mine so I could clean and repaint.

I was just going to rivet them back on with ones I had laying around.

Is there anything you can't find?

I doubt you'll get many responses to your question as these are supposed to be illegal for anyone other than an OEM to possess because non-restorers could cover up a stolen car.

What year is your Suburban?

I don't think rosette rivets came into use until the mid 1965 model year (at least for Pontiac nameplated vehicles).

You can do it yourself with a file, take your time and they'll look just like original.

Pimp, man you can find anything. You are going to have a nice burb when finished because that is some attention to detail right there. Good find!!

Your 65s should be Rosettes , not round

I wouldn't be surprised if it varies based on final assembly location and build month.

I'll try to remember to look tomorrow and see if my 65 are round or rosettes.

Re: vin tag rosette rivets

When I bought my truck, somebody had replaced the original VIN tag rosette rivets with standard round ones. I can't say for sure whether or not they had replaced the cab for a collision repair or just removed the tag to paint. The cab appeared to be original. Everything on the truck was legit, it had the original frame, engine, transmission, SPID, and VIN tag. However due to it being an older vehicle and from another state, a highway patrolman was required to inspect it. He agreed on our opinion of the VIN rivets but could have easily impounded the truck as stolen. 15 years later, before transferring the title to another state and taking this risk again, I replaced the round rivets with rosette rivets for peace of mind.

Keep in mind that the sale and manufacturing of these is basically illegal. There was a EBAY seller a few years ago who was indicted on federal charges. Numerous threads on the subject have been closed. This forum cannot take on the liability. However with that said I think there are plenty of legitimate reasons that enthusiasts or restorers like ourselves would use them. But if you can avoid messing with the rivets you should in my opinion.

Re: vin tag rosette rivets

i think my 65 was original the the frame cuz it was really rusted "BAD", unless the original cab was a totaled heap, i couldnt see them swapping. its all legal now so im not gonna worry...

It's a dumb law. Yes it has potential for fraud, but no different than say a baseball bat is potentially a deadly weapon.

WOW! I was thinking of reproducing these but if I go to jail for it I don't think all my equipment for the power brake pedal pads would fit in my cell! I guess I'll just keep working overtime at the plant! :whine:
