Tahoe Limited - New Daily Driver
Picking up a clean used 99 Tahoe Limited today. Have always liked these Tahoe's, but just never had the need. I currently drive a pretty rusty 99 Regal GS, but haul my little girls to and from daycare daily. Feel the tahoe is more structurally sound than the rusty regal is.
It already has a bluetooth Pioneer radio, so that is one less mod I will have to do. Some one has removed the hitch at some point or it never had one? Those are easy enough to come by though. Planning to tint the front windows, clean up the front wheels best I can ( they have been stained with brake dust :( ) But all and all just going to drive it! I'll get more pics tonight, but this is what I have so far. As i change/modify things I'll update this thread. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps0hsumzu8.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps2asi4bxw.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps7ixidebx.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps1k7evobp.jpg |
Re: Tahoe Limited - New Daily Driver
Nice looking truck, I've always liked the two-tone interior on those.

Re: Tahoe Limited - New Daily Driver
Nice score, even has barn doors! Someday I would love to have one lowered 2/4 and repainted a different color.

Re: Tahoe Limited - New Daily Driver
Nice. I've always loved the Tahoe Limited.

Re: Tahoe Limited - New Daily Driver
Thanks gents!
Odd thing about these is, you can't find any data to support a 1999 Titled Tahoe Limited. BUT I was able to have a guy on a GMT400 FB page run the vin and got me the RPO list. It is for sure a Limited. Early production too. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...pspmnmcfzs.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psump9txsh.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...pskprfbupp.jpg Found the Speedo to be 3 mph off at 75. GPS only read 72. Pulled the tune out last night with HP tuners, but did nothing with it yet. Will have to see if the tire size was changed at some point. It also seems high in the front end, which could support my theory on larger dia tire install..... aka riiiimz http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psxgjxrhq5.jpg |
Re: Tahoe Limited - New Daily Driver
The VIN is an X, so it's for sure a 1999 model year. How crazy. I always thought they were 2000 only as well.
Your stock tire size should be 255/70. Looking at your pics, the tires look like they might be a little bit shorter. It's also normal for the 2wd 4-door Tahoes and Yukons to sit high in the front. I had a '99 Yukon long ago. I measured it before I lowered it and it was 3/4" high in the front at stock height. |
Re: Tahoe Limited - New Daily Driver
Pulled the rims off today to start to strip them. They are pretty rough....
454ss wheels look pretty decent though http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...pslrpk0z5p.jpg |
Re: Tahoe Limited - New Daily Driver

Re: Tahoe Limited - New Daily Driver
Nothing much as far as sound or excessive displays of horse power... but the posi works!

Re: Tahoe Limited - New Daily Driver
Haha, stop that! You're shortening the life of those Indy's!
Glad the G80 is in good shape. |
Re: Tahoe Limited - New Daily Driver
Wish firestone still made those, they where nice tires.

Re: Tahoe Limited - New Daily Driver
Finally spent some time doing a few needed upgrades and maintenance on the Tahoe.
First I stripped the Grill and lights out to clean up behind it for paint... http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psngbinbak.jpg Removed leaky radiator and old clutch fan, sprayed down the engine bay with simple green, and pressure washed it all off. Let it sit over night and came back and put down some satin black paint here and there to brighten up things a bit. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps9imwkdsm.jpg I picked up a Painless wiring dual fan control kit and a pair of 2005 -07 GM truck electric fans. Had to do some minor trimming to get it to slide in place as well as bend the top oil cooler line a little to make room for the e-fans. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...pshvyehkj1.jpg Still need to replace both upper and lower hoses ( isn't it nice when you remove old stuff to just cut it off with a saws all!!! ) |
Re: Tahoe Limited - New Daily Driver
Good progress! I need to do e-fans on my Z71, 4L60e just gave up the ghost, so time to do the engine and trans I guess.

That is a good looking Tahoe! Don't find many at all that aren't 4 wheel drive.

Re: Tahoe Limited - New Daily Driver
So started the installation of the Painless Dual fan controller.
I wanted it to be well hidden, and try to appear like it belongs. Had the hardest time finding a place to put the sensor on a Vortec intake! I had a leaky quick disconnect heater hose that needed replaced anyways, so putting a T at that spot was about perfect. You think my local Orielly's could find me a 1/2 Pipe T.... NOPE... so off to Menards for some black pipe! http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...pskezg3ser.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps4brjerlw.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psczdwa5ob.jpg |
Re: Tahoe Limited - New Daily Driver
Time for a Tahoe update.... You ever just get a feeling you should look under your dash? I found something that made me cuss the PO for a bit.....
My 99 had a Dealer installed VHS with over head screen. VHS player was under back seat. The Dealer or someone of no electrical smarts what so ever installed this kit. For Power they used the Ignition power wires..... no fuses... and scotch locks.... SO the PO that I bought the Tahoe from had an audio shop install his amp and subs. They ran the wires down the drivers side. When they reinstalled the door sill plate, one of the screws must have caught the VHS power wire. Was most likely all good and well until someone flipped the switch on the dash to power the VHS player..... I'll bet this smoked like crazy... why it was not removed is beyond me.. but hey, I took it all out... and repaired the nasty wire job. From what I can tell the power wires for VHS melted and stopped the potential burn to the ground it was headed for.... http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psghiwccbu.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...pse7desphz.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psg0liawjf.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psm2osoeti.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psrzehswwy.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...pstk4ce0np.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...pspu8tttc4.jpg After this was over, I already had the drivers seat removed so figured I would go ahead and fix the failed attempt of the new seat cover installation. As you can see it fit horrible. Was told it was new cover and foam... ya no new foam just cover. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psinwfcb6w.jpg it was not stretched out right at all, and moved around on the old foam as you can see here. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psgzen4l9d.jpg This is what I found once removed... http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psa0uwtilp.jpg Ordered up a new foam from Amazon. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psih1mf9zh.jpg Cut a little card board to place over the metal edge to help save the new foam from cutting over time... at least this works in my head :) http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...pszkifwz2b.jpg Stretched our and fitted much much nicer than old foam. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psjbauzc9f.jpg Sits nice and firm now http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psvddeoo54.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psunqj1uzh.jpg So then on to the next "fix" I am just buying time here guys. This is by no means a final fix. I just didn't want it to pop and have a giant hole. My methods may not be exact, but again, better in my own mind. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...pstjdgjxmn.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psmlj4y1in.jpg If you don't think trucks rust from inside out.. well they do and here is the proof http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psd5cozh08.jpg I didn't get a photo of the welded area with paint removed before I got the filler out. I wanted it to set up so I could sand it the next night. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psstoiclwb.jpg went with PPG Color Match to the Onyx Black. I wet sanded and went back over it again with clear, wet sanded again and buffed it in. The clear coat sucks.. and I'll be going back over that again when I have time. The color match was great. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psusdljgso.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psd4t0ytko.jpg |
Re: Tahoe Limited - New Daily Driver
This brings me to current upgrading....
So last week my boy was off for spring break. We drove the Tahoe all over the first 3 days. Morning of day 3 we are headed to catch a train to go to Chicago to watch a Cubs/Brewers game. Trans started to slip 2-3 and bad in reverse. We got to train station no problem, it moved that night when we returned, but it did the same terrible slip 2-3 and reverse. So I get up the next day and pull the transmission pan... Check this out. http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psrql2t5op.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...ps5ajlpqgr.jpg That gold mud is plentiful and piled up on top of my filter too... I found a used transmission that was out of a good clean 100k mile light role over 99 Suburban. AND ordered a heavy duty TC with 2000 stall. |
Re: Tahoe Limited - New Daily Driver
I just did the 227k tranny in the Z71. It never gave me any indication it was on its way out, just died!
That wiring makes a guy sick. We all start somewhere, over the years I have become very particular, however. Rust fix looks like a nice "quick" repair to stop the cancer. Black is so difficult to repair and make it look right, you did a good job. |

yes wiring... when I was 14-16 years old, wire nuts and black tape. Now I'm more of a no splice if possible guy and solder/heat shrink butt connectors, all wrapped in loom. 20-25 years of going back and doing it again tends to drive that behavior :) Thanks for compliment on the rust repair. Its good enough for a driver, but I'm super picky. Most people would not even see an issue with it, I think it looks horrid... so there is that lol |
Re: Tahoe Limited - New Daily Driver
Tahoe is back on the road. new to me transmission works great. I even put in a stall converter. Picked up a unit off ebay for $135... figured I'd give it a shot.

Re: Tahoe Limited - New Daily Driver
Was time to upgrade the speakers in the Tahoe... my word.... It looks like this one has been wet at some point.... There was signs that the elec window motor had been changed so my guess is the window was down for a time and speaker got wet. That tweeter was not working either.
http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...pshafj9eoh.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psk6yponte.jpg http://i27.photobucket.com/albums/c1...psgg1wonsu.jpg Replaced with a cheap pair of JBL 1 way and tweeter combo from Amazon. Head unit upgrade to double din is next up. |

Subscribing to this thread. I always wanted one of these when they were new.
You're doing an excellent job of saving this one. |
